Powertap G3 $500 price drop

Postby nickobec » Fri Aug 02, 2013 4:24 pm

That is a $500USD price drop from $1299 recommended retail to $789, so under $700 on the street or ebay

Great news as I was contemplating between a crankbased or another powertap for racing. I have a training wheel with a powertap but it is quite heavy.
I did a quick look at Wiggle but price is still $1299. I wonder when the price will come down.

Once they shift the remaining stock they paid full price for, I'd guess. Worth noting the current pricing to confirm who is passing on the full saving when it finally comes.

Really is fantastic news; this forces down the used market as well quite a lot... imagine almost new G3 hubs for 500 bucks...

That is what I did last year 3kg training wheelset with an elite+ laced to mavic open pros to 2kg racing wheelset G3 laced to cheap chinese carbon rims (weight includes, tyres, tubes, rim tape, cassette & skewers ie elite+ ultegra cassette, GP4000s, lightweight tubes, G3 has sram red cassette, force/attack tyres, ultralight tubes)

Yes it does stop me using different wheelsets for different purposes/races ie it is always 38 or 60mm front and 50mm rear.

But then again I use three different cranks, 175mm with asymmetric rings on TT bike, 172.5mm on road bike and 170mm on crit bike. So a crank based power meter is not for me.

Next year I might get a garmin vector so I can use more wheels.

Speculation that they are simply clearing stock for Interbike online. I like the idea they have another cheaper model coming out - the Pro is gone right now...

Just shows how much we were being shafted on price previously.

Already happening. $700 on Ebay from Colorado cycles. There's going to be a lot of ticked off suppliers out there with old stock they likely paid substantially more for. The prices have been all over the place. Last November I purchased a G3 hub for $980 from Evans Cycles and they have since jacked their price up to over $1300. Wiggle; Chain Reaction: same story!

Anyone know of an Aussie retailer that'll be selling them at these prices? Not keen on buying more electronics from overseas, bad experiences

Powertap said the price change is effective immediately I expect Aus places to drop their prices straight away, if not they may never sell the old stock.

This will be good - I want to build up one wheel with this, it will be a cheaper entry into power meters than before.

I spoke to the Australian distributor this morning and he tells me that they won't be releasing the price in Australia for a couple of weeks yet. No explanation offered as to why. I reckon they got caught off guard and are hoping naive people will buy their stock at the old price. Once again in Australia we cop it in the neck. I suggested that I could purchase one from the US today, but would rather deal with a local bike shop. The guy on the phone sounded like he didn't give a hoot. He was quick to point out though that any warranty issues with a Powertap bought from the US would not be honoured here in Australia.

What... an Australian distributor cashing in on Naïve consumers? That's pretty much how half of the industry survives isn't it? Buy O/S. Worst case scenario is you'll need to remove the hub and send it back at a cost of $50 (or thereabouts) plus another $50 to have your wheel re-spoked. Is it worth paying double to have local support?

You couldn't force them to fix something in oz, because the warranty was not offered in Oz, but the USA.

Had my warranty problem with my G3 bought via mail from US "fixed" in the US, after lots of helpful advice from SARIS.

Sent the problem power cap back to SARIS who "misplaced" it, showed then the tracking for Australia Post they sent new one.

IMO that is absolute BS. If product "A" from manfacturer "B" is faulty it shouldn't have any bearing on where the product was purchased, a refund should be given or product should be fixed or replaced.

I went through a similar thing with a bike frame i bought from USA and it developed a crack. I went to LBS that stocks that brand and they tried to get warranty for me even though they hadn't obviously sold it to me but the manufacturer knocked it back because they could tell from the serial number that it wasn't an Australian frame. needless to say I won't ever buy another frame/bike of that brand again becasue of this.

You are not entitled to warranty beyond the Trade Practices Act in Australia. There is a difference between rights and expectations. Me? I am on your side, but some study on law recently has shown me that idealistic customer satisfaction levels are not rights at law. Good plan for ongoing businesses but doesn't mean a court will enforce what you expect. The restraints are not unreasonable from a court view. Best plan is to put the cash with other brands that give the service you expect.

Response from PowerTap:
You will have to go through the dealer or distributor that you purchased from to have your warranty processed.

My LBS called me today to let me know the Powertap pricing in Oz - A$899. With the dollar down at themoment, this is actually pretty good. With the potential warranty issues, it'll be good enough for me to buy local.
