Postby TREKKER_MIKE » Wed Oct 23, 2013 6:05 pm

Hi Guys,

Looking for some good rides just out of sydney (so i can drive there) have a nice quiet drive with minimal traffic, and take in the scenery, perhaps some good hills in there too for some training, just looking to change up the training scenery

Royal Nat Park, West Head, 3 Gorges, north, south and west of Camden, Berry and Kangaroo Valley (best choice for hills). There is a good book from Bicycling Australia called Where to Ride with these and more.

Thumbs up for Akuna Bay and West Head now they're resurfaced. Smooooooth!

An excellent workout too - no shortage of elevation change, especially when you add them together.

Some Camden options:

- Northern Rd is good with clean shoulders
- Luddenham/Mulgoa/Wallacia/Bringelly loop
- Razorback (old and new)
- Barkers Lodge Rd to Oakdale
- 15k downhill on Burragorang Rd
- Mayfarm Rd
- Menangle Rd (can start at Glen Alpine)
- loop Picton/Tahmoor/back roads through Yerrinbool to Alpine and back via Balmoral

The only dud is Camden Valley Way, which is dangerous and unpleasant

That one hurt me lol, for the last 30km I cramped most of the way and had to just spin through it to get home. Turns out 43deg days hurt more than I remember last year. In saying that tho I'd like to be able to make that a regular ride for me.

On the same lines.. I am wanting to ride Royal Nat Park Sunday week... Doing a loop from where I live... Is it best to get there real early in the morning? What's the traffic like?
Thanks
JJ

JJ - the traffic in the park does build up as the day progresses, but it's not usually troublesome except between the Bundeena road and Audley, which can get a bit busy and tight, and the sound and speed of the motorbike heroes who can take the edge off the otherwise beautiful southern section. I always go as early as possible, to make the most of the tranquility.

It's a good idea to have both head and tail lights, especially in the southern end, which is very shaded.

Thanks MREJ for the tips.
I had planned on leaving real early to hopefully get there well before most people have risen on a Saturday morning, or will be having their first coffee.
I always have head & tail lights, so will be having them running for sure.
