Electrolyte balance

Postby Marty Moose » Sun Oct 31, 2010 5:58 pm

Just thought I'd share some interesting things I've been dealing with of late. Over the last Month and a half or so I've been coughing alot hay fever season Asthma etc etc. Over the last two weeks its gotten really bad I can hardly breath and I've been having major muscle cramps in my toes, calfs, hamstrings, fingers and intercostal muscles. I know everone says eat banannas, drink heaps etc etc I do eat banannas and drinl 4-5L of water a day plus. At the same time my breathing has gotten really bad too I cough all the time and I mean hack with coughing fits, so bad I've been put on predislone a steroid to help reduce the inflamation in my chest (I coughed up blood). I normally hate predislone as its not real good for you and makes me feel flat but it does work.

So I'm four days into the predislone and no change if anything I'm worse:( :( Then yesterday I had people over for lunch one was a nutritionist, anyway she heard me cough and we got to talking. All the usual comes out fluid, salts etc etc I told her how much water I drink and straight away she says you are chronically dehydrated due to an electrolyte imbalance and are not absorbing the water because of this! First time I have heard this so I go and by some "Ultra Muscleze 280mg" (Bio ceuticals), Endura magnesuim formula as per what she said. It was not cheap but what the hell I've tried heaps of things. Last night I took the Muscleze and no cramps in bed I also drank about 2L of endura and slept the night through not one toilet break all night normally I need three :) :) and to top that off I slept like baby for 10 hrs I never sleep for more than 7 !!!

So I wake up today no cramps but what gets me NO COUGH no asthma at all. Is there a corelation between asthma/upper respiritory irritation and electrolytes ?? I feel heaps better no cramps today no over heating in bed and no unsettled legs all because of a few salts. She also told me to add salt to my food as I/we as cyclist use heaps and don't tend to eat as many processed salty foods as most people (we are all closet dieters) .

So anyone know about electrolytes and these symtoms mainly the ashma, if you get pursuiters cough heaps this maybe worth a try so far I'm impressed matter of fact I'm shocked.

Coments ideas anyone ??

There's a well-known link between dehydration and exercise induced asthma. See for example http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/19 ... 071643.htm

Most likely, the connection with the electrolyte drink is that getting the electrolyte balance right improves the effectiveness of cell hydration (i.e. avoids de-hydration or bloating from over-hydration). Many sports drink offer the right electrolyte balance.

Typical western male diets are deficient in magnesium, and correcting that (either naturally by food, or by supplements) will help your all-round health. Plenty of BNA'ers how found it useful in avoiding cramps.

Glad you've found something that works so well for you.
