Recovery after kidney infection with septicaemia

Hi, haven't posted for a while. But would really love your guidance in helping me regain my fitness without over doing it.
I am recovering from a recent serious illness - a kidney infection that went through to the blood - I was very sick. I was briefly in hospital with fluids/antibiotics
Now that I am starting to get back on track, I went for a slow ride (small) that was mostly flat for 12km. It nearly killed me, I felt like a jellyfish on wheels. My heart rate was high approx 120 - 130 for not really exerting myself much.
I got such a shock, I didn't think I would be that weak.
Is it normal to feel like this after an illness?
Should I just go flat and slow for a while to get some fitness up? Any great ideas? plan?
Many thanks, Sam

I feel like that on the first ride after a significant off time. So yes, your return ride is consistent with the severity of your illness. Just pace yourself back to fitness in coming weeks. It'll come.

I'd be getting some info from your Doctor. She/he will give you the best info.
Hope you feel better soon, that sounds like a nasty way to get some time off work.
There's a statistic that if you're bedridden and not weight bearing you can lose 3% of your muscle per day,
so that compounds if you're in bed for weeks. If that's applicable to you, well you'll get it back but it's not going to happen straight away.
Good luck

What was yr fitness like before yr illness? How far and how often were u riding?

Just take it slow, with low to moderate intensity and yr fitness will return in no time... Given what u have been through, hydration is very important....

Fitness wasn't great, I have had a few hurdles last year that have made riding very difficult in 2011. This recent hurdle felt like the end of the straw. I was given poor medical treatment on the way back from Queensland in a small town and it was obvious then I was quite toxic, so the this infection became very severe very quickly on the way home and was unable to seek appropriate medical help until we got home from holidays - 2 days
So I feel like I'm back at square one atm managing an easy 16km loop near home, but this year I am determined to increase fitness and go to the rides in March/April Orange, Mudgee and the B2b ride. I also wish to do some commuting.
I getting a new hydration pack for myself which will help keep fluids up. Yes I have been advised to push fluids.

If you don't take it steadily and behave yourself, then I will be forced to track you down and beat you, with a big stick..............or pump!

You will have to travel a looong way to get me.
Don't worry I think I might back off and go gently. I'm still getting continuing evening temp spikes and chills that are uncomfortable and it is making me scared.

I've just travelled 7,000ks in the past two weeks, so that's not a problem.

Do things right the first time and you should have no regrets later. :)
