Just a quick note on the fruit thing...

I read one of David Gillespie's books ("Sweet Poison") - he certainly makes a compelling case from his meta-analysis of the current research that's out there. Whilst I'm not a 'disciple', I would hypothesise that the 'sugar = bad' is at least one of the contributors to obesity. I think there is more to it, but think its a definite pathway...

And yeah, like I said, the fruit thing - Gillespie notes that when sugar is consumed at the same time as a relatively high dose of fibre, that the body handles it all much more effectively. Which is how fruit is conveniently packaged by Mother Nature - sugar and fibre in one convenient pack.

That is why I've completely ditched fruit juice, soft drinks, and most other added sugar in my diet, but I still definitely eat a couple of pieces of fruit every day (I mix it up across most fruit-types).

Cheers,
Abby

Most noticeable thing is how much better the hills are less 10kg.

Good stuff Craig! I knew you were a big unit, but didn't realise you were 195 cm tall! You've already lost a heap and look a shadow of your former self mate. Can't imagine what you'd look like sub-100kg....

Interesting reading regarding sugar content and it's effect on people...

Since reading this I've been trying to reduce my sugar content. I don't add sugar to anything other than porridge, I swapped that ages ago for honey, now I see that honey is no better! So now I just use sugar but less and less everyday, until it's gone, I hope!

I've been cutting back on beer and bread. Having a big drink of water or cordial (more sugar) when I get home on the bike (feeling hot and thirsty) instead of a quick beer, swapping bread for wraps etc...

I don't know if it's a coincidence but I've dropped over a kilo in the last 2 weeks!

Sugar is not the total solution but is certainly a part of it.

Going from memory one of the worst types is fructose, which is white sugar/cane sugar. If you want something to go onto the porridge try dextrose, it is the stuff brewers use, can be found in a lot of supermarkets and big w etc with the brewing stuff. Apparently it is not so bad, I used it to wean myself off sugar in the coffee.

Interestingly, I found it changed a lot of other tastes, rum being one. Before I didn't mind bundy, not a favourite but drinkable, after I cut sugar i found it way too sweet, couldn't drink it.

Thanks Bookworm.

I do home brew and always use dextrose but didn't consider it as an alternative to sugar on cereal!

I will continue weening myself off sugar on porridge but I don't think that's my biggest problem. Sugar content in everything else adds up to much more than a spoon in my porridge 2 or 3 times a week!

I agree that's sugar us only part of the problem...limiting bread consumption and cutting down on portions is another thing that will help me, but what works for one doesn't always work for everyone I guess.

I do all grain brewing so don't use dextrose any more.

I am in the same boat, need to cut back on bread. I do buy grainy breads so that it is a bit better but I eat way too much. I have been trying to have a scrambled egg for breakfast as one way to cut back on two slices. I also find that if I change one thing at a time, might only be small but have a definitive plan. I used to eat big bags of twisties and other chips, I used to say to myself I will cut back I will cut back etc but never did. Now I have have said for the next two weeks I will have none. Nada, Nil. That was two months ago. I have the odd few at a party now but cetainly don't eat by the packet. I don't miss them either! Have done similar with other things, tell myself its for two weeks then I usually find afterwards I don't miss it.

Guys,

Would you mind starting a why sugar is evil thread and keep this one relatively clean for it's intended purpose.

Maybe not a "why sugar is evil", rather "why too much of anything is not good for you".

Cheers

Cane sugar is half glucose and half fructose. Glucose is fine as it can be used directly by all of the bodies cells. Dextrose more or less = glucose.

The problem is fructose. The only path for it on the body is through the liver and converted to fat. It is of little use when exercising or at any time.

It is thought that when eaten in fruit it is absorbed better by the body so even the most ardent anti-sugar people still advise 2 pieces of fruit a day.

Cutting portion size is important if you're consuming high energy foods. I've gone from 127kg to 98kg in 5 months and my wife can't believe the size of my dinner time portions
Having said that, my dinner consists of around 200g protein (usually meat) and a mountain of salad or vegetables. Only rarely do I have carbs after 4pm. I do have carbs in the morning, an hour or so before I ride and usually take a gel with me if I'm riding much over 60 minutes. I know this wouldn't suit everyone but I adore salad and veges.

Weighed in yesterday morning, after the Ipswich 100 on Sunday and was down to 105kgs. Started the year on 112-115kgs depending on the scales. I feel like I'm losing the weight, but am getting much stronger in my legs which is nice.

Lost a bit more weight this morning when I came a cropper on the river loop and took some bark off my elbow and hip.... Hit a bump and my right hand got knocked off the hoods. After that it was a swerve, death wobble and then a high side. Landed on my head and smashed my helmet to bits. Better than my head I suppose....

Well, another milestone today, 30kg lost since early November last year. I'm now 96.5kg and my target is 87kg so still a bit to do.
The hiccup will be a Mediterranean cruise in a couple of weeks time.
I'm going to be careful but still enjoy myself.
I'm allowing for a 5-6kg increase in the month we're away.
Cheers to all you losers out there.

Very well done. Go and enjoy your cruise safe in the knowledge that whatever you put back on, you know you can easily lose again.

Nice work there

I weighed in at 95.4kg this morning.

That’s the lowest I’ve been in over a decade. My wife’s never known me at this weight. That’s down exactly 2kg in a month. I’m happy with the progression but to be honest I’m sick of being obese.

How about clocking up 1000km in the last 12 days, and losing nothing :(

I'm down to a steady 89 from around 91/92 kilos in about 2 weeks, so I'm happy...

I've been watching my sugar and bread consumption and I believe its helped, sadly the beer in take hasn't slowed

I should get my road bike this week when I intend to be increasing my ride time and k's so my target of 80 kilos is in sight....good luck all!

Welcome, you're a loser and that's just great.
At your age (any age really) you need to be fit and healthy. Being the correct weight will help as will cycling for aerobic, cardiac and arterial health.

Thanks iMad!! :D

After reading posts about your progressing success, it's been a good inspiration and extra motivation for me to push harder and further.

I've been unfit and on the big side for most of my life. So I thought this year it had to change and time to get off my bottom end to do something about it. And it feels good with all the small incremental achievements along the way of biking :)
