Transurethral resection of the prostate

Just back home after having that particular surgery done, and according to the pamphlet provided for after surgery care it mentions no strenuous exercise for at least 6 to 8 weeks.

Because I feel OK even after just a couple of days it seems a long time to be off the bike, and I’m looking for a bit of feedback from anyone that has been through this surgery as to how long I should wait before getting back riding again.

Cheers,
Tom

I have not had it Tom but one of my mates did and yes you need too adhere to this advice!

The reasoning to it as told by his Dr, is to allow everything to heal properly and therefore not cause problems for you in the future. :|

Now be a good boy and do as you're told.

If you do too much too early you risk rebleeding, scarring, strictures, urinary obstruction, infection, etc. Don't undo everyone's hard work! :)

Unfortunately the TURP procedure I had done left a considerable amount of scar tissue in the bit you hang on to when you have a twinkle, making it extremely painful to have a twinkle.

On top of that, 3 weeks after the TURP bit I had a Lithotripsy done in an attempt to clear out a couple of 8 mm stones from the right kidney, and the end result being that the bits of stone on the way out now regularly completely block the twinkle bit.

Real bloody painful.

Booked in now for a repeat TURP procedure in 4 weeks time and I can only hope they get it right this time.

 My bike has never looked so shiny and clean.

+1.

But it doesn't stop you from walking, light jogging and some upper body exercises.

Tell the surgeon that if he doesn't do it right this time, you'll stick a pineapple where the sun don't shine and see how he likes it!

All the best mate!

Yesterday I went back into hospital for the Urology surgeon to have another go at me.

Operated on at 3.30 pm, back home by 6.30 pm, and now I’m sitting here with a tube in the old fella and a bag strapped to my leg, wondering when I’m finally going to be well enough to get back on my bike. :(

Just got my tube out 3 weeks ago. I had a stint in for 6 months, that made even looking at a bike seat painful, sitting on it felt like getting stabbed in the groin. Let it heal 100% then wait another week before you go near the bike. If you dont let it heal and it keeps having to re heal itself after you upset it riding the bike the urinary tract can close up because of the re healing process. Then you might need a stint up there like I had which will put you off the bike for 3-6 months.

The catheter is a pain. Put some KY on the end of the old fella every now and then, it helps with the chafing/irritation. Good luck :)

You are right of course, just that it been 3 months since the original OP and I guess I’m just getting sick of the whole thing.

But then you have had to go through the stent in there bit for 6 months, so I’m not all that bad off after all.

Yes, you have made me feel better........and yes, I will be a bit more patient and stop feeling sorry for myself. :)

I’m not sure when I can get back on the bike again. :?

Waited almost 4 weeks before having a very leisurely ride around Casey Crit for 30 minutes only, and found I was peeing blood after the ride.

Two days later I was back in Casey hospital with renal colic, as it appears that an 8 mm kidney stone shifted and blocked the left kidney.

Back home taking pain killers when required, and now look like waiting another 3 weeks for a surgery appointment to have that removed.

Bugger

Absolutely, you're not having much luck Tom :(

Take it easy and let it come good, hard as it will be.

Bugger! We don't realise how utterly crucial good health is until we loose it. These things seem to come in clusters. Best of luck Tom

I’m sorry to say this health saga is continuing to give me a hard time as I have averaged a kidney colic episode at least every second day, with three attacks one day during the last three weeks or so.

Bloody painfull

Finally got my appointment to have the kidney stone removed next Tuesday ...........however......last Thursday night I noticed that a firm warmish lump, sore to touch, had appeared on a varicose vein high on my thigh, so Friday it’s off to my GP who diagnosed a blood clot and sent me off straigh away to have a Doppler Ultrasound done on my right leg.

End result of that examination confirmed that there is also a Deep Vein Thrombosis in the lower leg, in other words a blood clot in a vein that in this case goes directly to the lungs.

I was told to go back and see my GP again immediately by the examining technician as a matter of extreme urgency........unfortunately my GP has Friday afternoons off, and it having been impressed on me that this is an urgent matter, I decided to go to the emergency clinic at the Casey hospital.

Arrived there at 3.00 pm and was finally seen by a doctor at 8.00 pm.

After him reading the report from the U/sound technician and examining my leg, decided that the matter was not urgent and sent me home again..........5 hours waiting and a 7 dollar parking fee.......

So today back to my GP and after telling her the story she goes right off, and phones the hospital. Then writes me a referral and tells me to go back to Casey hospital for urgent treatment.

Keep in mind that if they give me the appropriate treatment for the DVT the procedure to remove the kidney stone is automatically cancelled.

This time the waiting time was only one and a half hours, seen by the same doctor again, and again was sent home, as according to him the matter is not urgent.

So at this point in time I’m due at Casey hospital on Monday for an X-ray to confirm the location of the kidney stone, and again on Tuesday to hopefully have it removed.

Then I guess the DVT will require treatment.

To be quite honest I’m sitting here right now in my office in my garage with my bike parked beside me, bloody confused and not feeling real good. :(

PS. tomorrow is my GLW’s birthday so I better spark up and not spoil it for her, as I did promise to take her to the Kew boathouse for lunch, and at least now I can keep that promise.

Tom, you have my sympathy.
In some ways the waiting for appointments, the waiting between appointments and the uncertainty and worry are as hard to deal with as the problem itself.
Different problems for me. A life spent in the outdoors has caught up with me. Skin problems (SCC's) and now the same in one eye. GP's, specialists, tests, procedures, medications, trips to Melbourne, it just goes on and on.
The one thing I have really come to value over anything else is the extraordinary willingness of my family and one or two very good friends in offering all sorts of help. People are amazing.
I hope today's trip to the boathouse is a good one. Have a great day and all the best.

Thanks for the offer Tom. I'm due down in Melbourne again mid-late November. Been doing there-and-back in a day trips recently. It's a big day. Next time I'll stay overnight at my brother and his family's place, break the trip up a bit. In which case a stop on the way home for a cuppa wouldn't be a bad idea. Thanks.
I'll be in touch.
How'd the day out for you and the GLW go?

No expert, but isn't DVT supposed to be a bad "bad thing"? I would be asking to see another doctor at the hospital, or get your GP to arrange something more useful. Maybe your guy does not consider anything serious unless it's dangling and bleeding a lot. Sounds wrong. from what little I know, clots below the knee are not considered as bad now, but above the knee are still thought pretty serious.

BTW reading the thread I just think "bugger me! What more?" Hope it all gets fixed ASAP.

Nick
