So ive searched this forum and found info on all sorts of obscure ailments, but what about old fashioned road rash....
I came off the bike yesterday and lost some bark on my thigh and elbow

What is the best way to get these fricking unpleasant wounds to heal quickly/?
I want to ride right now but it hurts to sit down let alone straddle a saddle!!!

Cover with swabs, savlon and tape or best to just leave to dry out and scab up?
Hurts like fury when changing the bandages
Do people use non adhesive (moist) wound dressings ??

Don't let them dry and scab up. Keep moist and they will heal much better.

For road rash my preferred treatment is antibiotic ointment (bought in the US, you can't buy it in Oz) applied to an adhesive dressing pad like OpSite Post Op then placed over the wound. Leave in place for a couple of days before changing (it gets pretty disgusting from the wound exudate, but it's supposed to). I guess you could use Savlon in place of the antibiotic ointment.

You can get OpSite in different sizes and there are equivalent versions of other brands available. If you have a long scrape, then overlap the dressings to make sufficient length - just make sure you cut the adhesive off the edge that will be in contact with the wound. You don't want adhesive over your wound coz you will disrupt the healing tissue every time you take it off to change the dressing.

Shop around for the Opsite - you can pay a fortune if you don't.
I found the best and lowest at a pharmacy at a hospital

Naaah, seriously. +Lots to OpSite and whatever goo the GLW used. My latest is almost invisible after 7months.

Fixumol is the !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !!.
Dressing you put over the whole area, it covers the road rash but keeps it clean and lets it breath. i keep mine on for three or four days before removing. Hurts like the proverbial when you pull it off unshaved legs but it's good stuff.

Scrub hard, cover in sterilized vaseline and stick proof dressing... keep moist till it fills back in, don't let it go into a big hard scab.
Although saying that roadrash scabs are really cool to peel off .

+1 for the fixomull, aka hypafix.
you can leave it on for up to a week in some cases. Don't need to cover for a shower, just pat dry afterwards.
soaking with vegetable or baby oil for a few hours will help get it off.

No I'm udderly serious it assists the healing process to mooove along much faster. I recently used it on my calf. No bull.

Do you need a longer than usual scab jar for that or do you break them up before putting them in?

Eating your own scabs I totally get but would you eat someone else's?

Fixomull Stretch covering a non-adhesive patch and the cream that was used on it was Flamazine, a prescription only topical anti-bacterial cream applied with a sterile spatula. The dressings were changed daily at the time of cleaning the wounds. They didn't look too nice.

Oh, and some Betadine on it too at first. That hurt! It took a while for my last ones to mend, but they are okay now. A little bit of visible scaring left over, but not much.

After have a nice lovely fall and going from 60kph down a hill to a 90 degree bend I have had some lovely Road Rash.

Fiximoll (or how every you spell it), buy it in a roll, make sure your shaven and apply. I was prescribed some silver cream from the doc's too. Applied cream and stuck on.

Didn't place a pad or anything over the RR, manily due to it staying mosist it doesn't stick to the scab.... big thing is DO NOT PULL IT OFF EARLY. I left mine for upto a week on there. There was a couple of times I was wondering due to it healing wet and infection but it was all good.

Fixomull, just like metape. I'm using metape at the moment on my hip/elbow/knee after a painful crash the other day. I've used it once before. Cleaned wound, stick it on. Leave it there for a week or so, depending on the extent of the RR, showering and all, and gently peel off when healed.
