Sore knees

Postby TheDon » Mon Aug 04, 2014 8:37 pm

Swapped to speedplay pedals recently. Both knees now sore after riding. Thinking I might need to drop saddle a touch to account for reduced stack height. Thoughts?

Hi mate, maybe we should compare notes/pain :-). I've been told the following which I'm working through fyi

Back of knee pain = Seat to high

Front of knee pain = seat too low.

Inner side knee pain = cleat too far on inside of shoe.

Outer side knee pain = cleat too centred or outside of shoe.

Or you might need to open up the float a bit more. I screwed my zeros out to the max limit which I think has helped a little.

Also just a quick note on seat too high. I find that's my usual problem after I've "played with my bike settings". I always find I have a lot more dramas with my knees from seat too high rather than seat too low so always better to err on the lower side I find. I did it again this week actually. Forgot to do my usual check of heal touching the pedal with the pedal straight down (the guys off here at BNA have given me that tip that is easy to check and has helped me heaps to find the right height).

You also have too take into account the seat back or forward part, when lifting and lowering the height.

Assuming same cleat position behind the 1st metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint, u will need to drop your saddle a little as the speedplay setup has the lowest stack height of most of the common pedal systems...

I picked up my road bike friday and got a fit with it too went for a 95k ride the next day and about halfway through my right calf felt crampy so we took a few breaks and made it home, once home though I noticed a tightness in the back of my knee but only on the right side again. Im wondering if this is more to do with cleat positioning rather than seat being too high as it is only on the right side??
