So 47% or 0.47 on blood tests? If so, mine is too. Isn't that a fairly normal (male) reading? My blood test says the range is 39 - 54, so the average from that is 46.5.

0.47 I think he said. I didn't see the written result. but he quoted that range which I've read in discussions of levels for pro cyclists so I'm sure it's the same measure as talked about in cycling.

I just looked at a blood test report I have (which includes historical data). Mine has ranged between 0.44 and 0.47 over the past 15 years (around 5 tests). I started cycling about half way through that period and was fitter (by some margin) than I had ever been, but I see no change in the haematocrits relating to the increase in fitness which surprises me. If anything the levels were slightly lower in the fitter period. I guess this is not something effected by fitness level.

I ask for a copy of my blood tests. I haven't been refused yet. Then I scan them into my computer so I have easy access to my blood test history.

Can red blood cell count be converted to haematocrit %?
Mine was 5.45 million/cubic mm a few years ago

Don't worry about haematocrit. You can easily get an elevated reading by just drinking less water and more diuretics like coffee and alcohol for 12-24 hours before the test.

i.e. if you are dehydrated, you don't have as much plasma, so your rbc will make a higher % of total blood volume.
