I think that's the key for the vast majority of people. That and making baby steps is what has been working for me. Inevitably you'll plateau somewhere and have to stop and re-evaluate your choices, but more incremental changes are easier to make as you go.

I counted calories for a few months just to learn more about diet and nutrition; and it's probably high time I gave myself a refresher course. That was eye-opening and also helps with portion control. It's way too tedious to maintain indefinitely, but once you get the gist of what you're putting in your mouth, you can wing it from thereon in. I personally don't see the utility in the pre-prepared meals as ultimately you have to learn how to cook properly for yourself. Plus it's expensive.

Just a caveat - and you've probably been told already by absolutely everyone you know with kids - your free time factor will plummet and your fatigue level will sky-rocket. For a while at least. So avoid making grandiose exercise plans before he/she arrives! I started riding when my daughter was two, and then when my son was born soon after, my km reduced drastically. Zwift has made a huge difference there!

Good luck!

This is something I've considered, although won't know until I get there.
I'm mainly trying to build positive habits now so that I can at least try and maintain a semblance when things kick off. This would be waaay harder try to start afterwards!

18/06/2018 189.5 96.4 98 26.84 0.517

So, down another 0.7kg, but no change to my waist.

I actually find it quite difficult to get an accurate waist measurement, so I'm not too worried about it. And looking at that progression of waist measurements, I may have measured it too small last time.

Good plan, absolutely. Not meaning to discourage you in any way.

Just don't feel you're failing and throw in the towel when your bundle of joy arrives and your weekly/monthly/yearly goals (if you have them) evaporate for a while. That's likely true for diet as well as exercise - although to a lesser degree - until things settle down. And you probably won't have to worry about eating out too often either! ;)

Good luck and keep checking in here with your results! :D

I've been in this position before and getting back on the horse is the hardest part. Anyone can make the commitment but following through when you're at the low point is the big test of character!

Same same. Time to try something new.
84kg so gained two kilo.oh well it was fun.

Grilled chicken and pork, ice cream and vast amount of beer for a month. I honestly knew it wouldn’t work but it was fun. Now I am back home, I I am going to do what worked best last year. Moderate carbs and protein and low fat.one meal per day. Oh I will also do some pedalling too.

June check-in!

Started this journey mid-2014 at 114.5kg.

As of 2018:
12/2018: Weight=95kg
01/2018: Weight=94.1kg, WtHR=0.55, BMI=29.7
02/2018: Weight=93.2kg, WtHR=0.55, BMI=29.41
03/2018: Weight=91.0kg, WtHR=0.54, BMI=28.72
04/2018: Weight=90.5kg, WtHR=0.53, BMI=28.56
05/2018: Weight=90.2kg, WtHR=0.53, BMI=28.79

06/2018 (Jul 1st):
Weight = 90.2kg (same)
WtHR = 0.53 (same) (consider action)
BMI = 28.79 (same)

Brought it back from a disastrous first half of the month. Injuries, health issues, and family health issues all compounded with careless diet (mainly dinners and drinks with visitors) and the results were absolutely as expected. Back on track in the latter half of the month to negate the damage. May not have made any progress this month but feel good that I am able to turn things around when required. Thoroughly enjoying all aspects of the exercise, predominantly cycling, so no issues with motivation on that aspect!

Work will get busy this month so it'll be interesting!

Nearly 3 months, 1500K longwise and 10K upwards later, I've lost about 1.5Kg. Now sitting just under 86. The overall mass reduction has slowed very much, but my dimensions continue to shrink. My pants are starting to look like they've got bigger in the wash. It's been a very long time since I had a 36" waist, that's for sure!
I'm not really expecting much more weight to drop off: not prepared to change the diet, which is reasonably balanced but allows for some indulgence; the exercise part is more likely to further densify me than reduce mass.

Mate, you could be all hair-shirt about it, but really, you've done a helluva job - and sustained it over 4 years. Are you significantly healthier now, even when life gets in the way, than you were then? Dumb question, I spose ...

Thanks! Still a work in progress after 4 years! Not sure of the end-game but suspect around 80kg, and that's likely a couple of years away.

Definitely healthier, reflected not only in my weight and fitness, but also my blood results - including blood pressure! My GP wants my pressure a tad lower due to the fact that I have one kidney but it's not too bad. As for diet, I am eating better but even when I do indulge a little, I at least think about what the effects are going to be. So those scales are always in the back of my mind! ;)

The older I get, the more I realise how critically important maintaining a healthy lifestyle is. In our youth we take our health and vitality for granted but at some point in life you have to really start working for it. I thoroughly enjoy my cycling (it's my current obsession), my weight training and my soccer so my main impediments for exercise are time and injuries rather than motivation. For this I am thankful I discovered cycling, and hopefully my enthusiasm for it won't wane. With any luck I'll be riding centuries in my 70's whilst some of my peers are parking in the mobility impaired parking spaces at the mall!

I think I can say that I've achieved my immediate goal of 85Kg, since I haven't gone over that for the past fortnight. That makes just under 10Kg lost in 7 months, which should be sustainable without undue effort. And we'll see how we go from here on in.
By the way, did I tell you that I have veeery nice legs? But am developing arms that are more like chicken wings ...

Weighed in at 96.1kg the other day. That's down a little, but I didn't take a waist measurement at the time.

I gave blood this morning and the nurse told me that I don't look like my ID photo because I have lost so much weight.

Then we talked about overseas trips and I found out that she was Spanish. So I practiced my Spanish with her and she complimented me on my accent.

So I'm feeling pretty good about myself, all in all :)

@RobertL If I were your height, I'd be pretty pleased. Man at 6 foot 2 and a bit is allowed to have greater mass than me at 5' 10". Kill 'em on the flat!

30/04/2018 189.5 98.5 100 27.43 0.528
21/05/2018 189.5 97.1 98 27.04 0.517
18/06/2018 189.5 96.4 98 26.84 0.517
23/07/2018 189.5 96.1 97 26.76 0.512
30/07/2018 189.5 95.9 96 26.71 0.504

Still losing weight slowly. First time that I've been under 96kg for many, many years. Almost where I need to be for waist to height ratio. I'm pretty happy with it all.

Nice work!! You must be feeling great!

I’m closing in on my first goal. First weigh in under 81kg on the weekend. Now I have to cement that in with a bit more focus on diet. That will leave 1kg to go, then it’s time to reset goals.

Smashing out PR’s on strava every ride which has been a big help in staying motivated.... Riding out the front of our club group... My fitness has improved remarkably since I started in Feb.

95.0kg this morning - a new PB.

Also, according to the Oxford "better" BMI scale I have now sneaked under 25 (@24.98) which takes me out of the "overweight" range.

I don't hold a lot of faith in BMI measurements, but it's another little accomplishment to tick off. Another little bit of validation and reinforcement.

Well done! I'm a way off that yet but, as you say, I don't put too much stock in it as I have a more solid build than most and lift weights.

August check-in!

Started this journey mid-2014 at 114.5kg.

As of 2018:
12/2018: Weight=95kg
01/2018: Weight=94.1kg, WtHR=0.55, BMI=29.7
02/2018: Weight=93.2kg, WtHR=0.55, BMI=29.41
03/2018: Weight=91.0kg, WtHR=0.54, BMI=28.72
04/2018: Weight=90.5kg, WtHR=0.53, BMI=28.56
05/2018: Weight=90.2kg, WtHR=0.53, BMI=28.79
06/2018: Weight=90.2kg, WtHR=0.53, BMI=28.79
07/2018: (no results)

08/2018 (Sep 1st):
Weight = 89.7kg
WtHR = 0.53 (same) (consider action)
BMI = 28.63

No results recorded for July due to aforementioned events, plus my trainer also died. The good news is that I finally bought a smart trainer and despite being ill for a week shortly after and not able to use it, I'm back on track. Officially in the 80's now, and determined to keep it that way!

My specialist wants me to lower my blood pressure further, so that's the goal before my next visit in November. Plan of attack is to lose more weight, and increase my fitness. I'm going to cut back on the weekend indulgences which should help to accelerate my weight loss slightly, as I'm now drifting a little behind in my yearly weight goal.

My cycling distance goal is a little ahead of schedule, despite recent events, and I'm really enjoying the Zwifting on the new trainer. Haven't been for as many IRL rides as I'd like, but as long as I'm getting my km done it's neither here nor there.

Nice work! 85kg is my goal by year end, which would (also) be 10kg loss for the year!

Definitely not a fan of the 'cyclist arms' though. That's why I supplement my cycling with lifting weights. Even so, the weight loss over time (25kg thus far) certainly has me looking a little less... imposing (for lack of a better word). I know I'm far, far faster and fitter on the soccer field now, but the opposition doesn't quite bounce off me as well as they used to!

Ain't that the truth! I used to look so good when I swam a lot; now I've turned into a domestic fowl of indeterminate breed.
Apparently I'm still "overweight" according to BMI measure now at under 83Kg and 178 cm. Don't they know about my legs? My head is also very heavy, because I'm old and it's pretty much full up.
My clothes keep getting larger, and I'm beginning to think that this wasn't such a good idea. It may turn out quite expensive if I have to buy a whole new range of pyjamas.

Tried on some pants and shorts yesterday, and I'm back to the problem I had back in my 30's... too loose at the waist, and still too tight around the thighs. Cycling and squats will do that to you... guess it's better than the other way around! 8)
