Where's the unicyclist? In case anyone is wondering...

Postby ColinOldnCranky » Thu Oct 04, 2018 9:31 pm

I case anyone has missed me over the last month:

I had my second cardiac arrest on 2 Sep. The first was in July 2106.

ggggggThis time I was fortunate (relatively) as I collapsed at my wife's feet in the lift of or apartment. People ran down the stairs and CPR was started instantly. And the ambo parks a mere minute away.

Now have an internal defib. That's a good thing as various experts have told me the chances of having survived the pair in my case are anything from 1 in 400 to 1 in a thousand. I don't need to multiply those odds down further with another attack.

Anyway, while this is again knocking me hard, so far it looks like I will have good healthy function. It'll take another month before I can be secure in that.

In the meantime, do some extra kms for me. I won't be doing them for a few weeks longer at least.

yeah, had a stent. I'm not sure atm how to interpret my discharge and other documents but, for some reason, my wife thinks that the seond may have resulted from a problem with the stent. I'll be disucssing these things with my cardiologist at the end of the month. It does appear that, like so many, my responses to some forms of heart distress are atypical. As far as I understand it atm I do not need a completed blockage for the heart to move into STEMI, which mostly is unrecoverable. But again I need to have a word with my cardiologist. Regardless, so far lucky. VERY lucky.

I now have a second stent, have to avoid within practical limits shop security systems, airport security, some power tools and other electronic equipment, induction stoves, etc etc etc.

Thanks Colin.

It sounds like your stent partially blocked, an area of the heart was getting insufficient blood supply and triggered a heart rhythm where the heart muscle doesn't contract in an orderly fashion and stops pumping blood (fibrillates).
I'm sure your cardiologist will have the info anyway.

Glad you were at least able to be assisted quickly Colin.

A friend has heart problems in all the men in his family and had a similar incident. Doing well now and it was years ago.

All the best..

Colin, there is a ICD information and support group meeting on 29 Oct at SCG Hospital. If you haven't got an invite and would like to attend, message me and I can sent you a copy.

Having a defib for the last 2.5 years also happy to catch up for coffee, though I'm not in the normal defib category, as I ride to my 6 monthly defib check, but more than happy to chat about my experiences with one, and what I do/don't do with one.

Should we all start singing "achy breaky heart". Get well soon.

Thanks, sent PM. Last time I was back to riding full distances three days after discharge but atm I have a bad case of the dreaded lurgy so I'm just walking around the east perth area fighting boredom and trying not to sneeze. But f you care to I'd be happy to sit down for a coffee somewhere in East Perth and pick your brains.

Sorry to hear of your cardiac arrest Colin, wishing you are back on the recovery trail and back on the Unicycle soon...Summer's coming, it's warming up ya know...and blood flows easier when it's warm.
Take care and get well soon.

Easy there. Rest up and get well soon. Fingers crossed everything goes smoothly for you.

A friend of mine also has a stent after heart problems. He's not as mobile as you seem to be though, he really struggles.

Oops, I forgot to mention that the immediate return in 2016 to full riding was with the blessing of my cardiologist and a stress test as soon as I was allowed one to get back to driving. I'm pretty sure that I would not ace the stress testing now as I did then.

With this friggin' wog, it's hard to know how much I am tired from the heart issues and how much from the lurgy.

I'm going great. And despite my earlier misgivings I got the same excellent stress test scores as last time.

I'm still riding, still got good BP and heart rate metrics, still squeezing in time for the gym and currently I'm putting a couple of hard days a week building stuff for Blazing Swan (Google it). Much to my wife's relief I recently got back my right to drive as supported by my cardiologist post stress testing and other factors.

My demonstrated inclination to go into Sudden Cardiac Arrest" (SCA - it's the high mortality prize winner :? ) is just one of those things that is not easily explained by the usual heart disease risk metrics. So, just in case it ever happens again, I now have an ICD (defibrillator) fitted in my chest which will give me a high voltage boot if it ever happens again.

In the ICD user manual under "Sexual Intimacy" it does warn that my partner could get a "tingle" if my ICD fires off. My kids tell me that sex shops sell electrical stimulation sex toys so I guess that makes me a senior citizen bionic sex toy! Eat your heart out Steve Austin! All you can do is run fast.

Prey you don't need to use it. Mine did (incorrectly) twice in a row. My daughter ran in, and I was telling to her not to touch me as concerned I would shock her. It has now been reset to cater for my condition and type of exercise I do. It is also there for when I really need it.

I am still trying to determine the algorithms that will trigger a defib shock.

However, as I understand it ATM, the thing will fire off regardless of custom settings appropriate to your use. Those settings appropriate to your use will not affect when it will fire off. Rather, those settings determine when things get reported to your concerned cardiologist. If you do lots of hard riding for example, they may set the threshold for reporting high heartrate at a higher higher bpm but not do anything to the defib. They are trying not to alarm your specialist with reports of excessive "events" just because you do more vigorous exercise than the average Aussie "Norm".

Anyway, if I do come out with anything to the contrary I'll try and post somewhere about what I find.
