Looking at giving MTBing a go

Hi all, I've been doing the roadie bit for a while and whilst I do love it I was out camping over the weekend and saw some guys out MTBing, and thought, that looks like alot of fun. So Been looking at an entry level Bike to see how it goes, came across this

What do you think? worth it? or should I look for a hard tail, I really don't want to spend alot to start off with, (just bought a house so not alot of cash floating around)

I wouldn't spend less than 1500 on a dually. In that price range hit up a hardtail, maybe 29er.

Yeah a cheap n nasty dually could really suck, go a hardtail.

Like PB, I have considered having a go at mountain biking, after many years of riding a road bike. I mentioned it to the owner of a LBS, and he encouraged me to have a go. In fact, he offered to lend a few bikes to myself and a couple of mates. Obviously, he is looking to make a few sales if we enjoy it, but I thought it was pretty good business - and we get to try mountain biking without having to lay out any cash.

A good LBS should be able to lend you a demo bike for a few days so you can get a feel for it.

The used to retail for about $1100-1200. You may be able to get the price down to around $400.

I'm in a similar boat, but happily I had a reasonable hardtail (2005 Avanti Montari) already in the shed, so pumped up the tyres and went for a ride up the escarpment to Brokers Nose.

Shortly after that ride, I replaced the v brakes with hydraulic disc brakes and am now having a lot more fun. I'm looking forward to completing an audax dirt series this season and maybe have a crack at the Highland Fling next year. Offroading is certainly a nice change of pace, especially where the traffic is lyrebirds and wallabies.

The "Cape tp Cape" involves a beach leg? I wouldn't be taking an expensive bike in that race. YMMV.

The "Cape tp Cape" involves a beach leg? I wouldn't be taking an expensive bike in that race. YMMV.

Just wash it after. Its pretty easy to strip it down. Much easier than stripping down a M/X bike after a salt lake section in a desert race.

I mean, mud and grit also destroys your pads and drivetrain, but there's the joy of the activity, right?

? give it a good wash and you'll be fine. there is enough else out there to damage your MTB than worrying about riding on a bit of sand.

hey, nice choice.
congrats on your new bike. i just baught my brother one of those a 2013 Matts 20.
They are a fantastic beginner to MTBing, a fast and handsome bike too.
