opinion on a bike

gday all im new to the site.
im starting to get into the off road biking a lot more and i love it. the way it turns out my uncle is selling his old MTB and asked me if id like it for AU$150.
it has
-specialised FSR dual suspension
-manitou and rock shox shocks
-diacomp brakes
-shimano deore derailer
-mavic rims
i have a feeling the bike is a good five years old or so but as im only just getting into the MTBing i dont want to purchase a new bike just yet.
is this a good deal for AU$150?

Mate,

Cheaper than spent 1000 + on one to find its not for you.
Only thing is with older bikes - they're usually heavy and you'll notice that when you take it off road and climb a few hills. THis could put you off as it makes it hard jard work. But if you keep that in mind. Consider how well your mate treats and maintans his kit before you buy it and whether it ahs had any service or replacement history. 5 years is a long time in the life of gears sprockets and chains.

ASk him to get it serviced first or spend $50 to have your LBS have a look at it and give it a general tweak and clean.

If you still like the sport, ride it until you're better than it and get a new one.

The older Stumpjumper FSRs aren't that heavy, I know someone who is still riding an older one.

Good frames good suspension design, OK travel, might want to get some new forks one day depending on how they are.

and if its only $150 then im thinking its a bargin even it is a little old cause i really only have a trek 3900 atm which is fantastic but i want something that can go a little more offroad. so regardless i think 150 is cheap as chips even if it does need a little work on it

If you don't want it, let him know I'll give him $150 sight unseen! Actually, I'd say he's doing you a really big favour. Anybody else would most likely have to pay $500+ for the bike. It sounds like a family discount too good to pass up.

I hope it fits you though. That's the most important aspect. At that price however, you can strip the frame and put the parts on a frame that's your size for a few hundred dollars more if needed.
