I'm a XC rider, so this might not apply to you. On the MTB, I wear my lycra shorts every time I ride, though I sometimes leave my normal shorts over the top if the people I'm riding with shape up to do the same.
As for a top, I just wear a normal cycle jersey of some sort, usually in muted colours.
Think outside the double triangle.
Music was better when ugly people were allowed to make it ....
hi there ricky, my personal opinion on choise of clothes is ,that you should choose a good pair of shorts and get a top that you like the design of ,its all about a comfy shorts and a nice looking jersey , and then just pedal m8 ,
i wear exactly the same as on the road bike, ie knicks, jersey, short fingered gloves etc when i am xc mtb racing.
When i am social mtbing i usually where mtb shorts (with knicks builtin) and long fingered gloves (tend to stack more when social riding)
Jersey doesnt matter, wear whatever looks and feels best.
But as others have said, the shorts is most important, get comfy ones.
Yeah I go bib knicks as well...not very "HardCore" but a lot safer than getting my shorts trapped on my seat in a techy section. But if I do go a bit more relaxed then shorts over a good pair of knicks (usually swimmers)...you just can't beat bib knicks!.I have a set of NZO mtb pants but they aren't as comfortable. Some people feel a bit embarrassed turning up in lycra when they are a newbie especially on a mtb...totally understandable, best option then is proper mtb shorts, not your coolest shorts with boxers underneath...you will suffer like a dog!.
Luckily I can kick most dualies arse's even on a hardtail
If you are down hilling...well skin suits are now banned!!!.
I wear baggies, with the padded lycra / chamois bum bit sewn into the inside. check out http://www.groundeffect.co.nz
the shorts range is here
bit too self concieus to wear the lycra skin tight numbers. plus these have pockets for those all important bits and pieces that dig into your leg when you fall off.
Yup, +1. Sometimes the ol' seat needs to come up somewhere near the solar plexus on techy downhill bits, and if the shorts snag it's gonna be one of those "Oh, <censored> ! " moments.
I've been keeping an eye out for some good trail shorts, but they're pretty exxy so for now I usually ride just with knicks or boardies with regular knicks underneath, depending on the crew. Not sure which is worse, though - the skinsuit look or Harry Highpants so that I don't get snagged on the seat.
Shy shorts and a big loose MTB long sleeve jersey for me.

Have just ordered some Nzo regular shorts (no liner) to try over the top of knicks, just to see if it's any better/worse than shy shorts (they were on sale, if it doesn't work, they're okay shorts to wear for other stuff). Sometimes with the shy shorts they feel like I've got this thick belt on around the waist.
Haha, that is so funny. Same here!
Previously I'd get skin off at least every second ride. Since getting my elbow/forearm pads I've had zero crashes general trail riding, and a single topple onto the elbow during a race last year in the rain when the front slipped on a wet root on a tight uphill switchback.
