just a quick one as I am doing this from my phone.
basically I crashed twice. injuring my shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle. should of pulled out but I htfu (plus I want the double centurion jersey ) rolled through with considerable pain for the last 45 to 50km but eventually made it in a super crappy time of about 8.5hrs, but happy just to finish.
hi Dean, first crash was around the 35km mark. It was over a pile of logs maybe 3 high which was on about a 45degree angle to the riding direction, the front tyre didnt make it over and went sideways along the logs, i kept going forwards over the bars landing on my left shoulder and elbow, fromt this point i struggled to lift the front end of the bike to get over obstacles and also dropping off stuff hurt also, this led to a 2nd crash where i then hurt my left ankle and knee, this was between 45and 50km mark, at this point i struggled to pedal and still could not negotiate obstacles at all. From this point on i cruised and stopped alot until the finish. A DNF was not an option, i was going to make it even if it took me all day (which it nearly did). I am feeling ok now, i havent riden since then but i think i should be ok for some road riding this week. will take it easy and hopefully be able to atleast put up a decent time next weekend at the dirtworks 100, but a finish in any sort of time will be my aim. The dirtworks is an easier event with lots of fire road, but there is a technical section in the middle that is about 10-15km long, constant up and down boulder stuff, this will hurt i think.
Will take it easy this week and see how i go though.

Garmin shows 2400m climbing. It was a tough event not knowing what to expect, the early morning drizzle and cold really hurt me alot, my tryes were not hooking up at all, once it dried a bit they were better. i only had short sleeve jersey and knicks also, and was cold the whole day, needed arm warmers at the very least. The 30min delay for the start was annoying also, hanging around waiting in the cold and drizzle was not fun, they need to sort out the entry into the place for next yr, i dont think it was the 100km riders arriving late but the 50km riders arriving early that casued the problem, the shoudl of blocked the road at 7am and proceeded with the start. Hopefully they will fix it for next yr. A firend of mine wants to do it next yr so i will most probably give it another crack. I think the event also needed a bit more fire trail to allow for easier overtaking, 60km of single track and getting stuck behind other riders or having guys right on your tail was tough, some guys would scream up the firetrail and then ride like grannies in the single track. It was frustrating, but probably more so for me as i was struggling so passing or moving out of the way was difficult.

Well done for having the strength to keep going and finishing!! Sounds like you had it very tough.
The delays were annoying, luckily I had a room so went back there to put the heating on and stay warm. Last year at the end of the start straight we went right and immediately left. Easy to say in hindsight now, but turning left and going up the entrance road this year, not the best way to start! A lot of people moaned about the hills at the end of last years so they arranged the loops to get some of them out of the way early on. There seemed to be more single track this year and about 200m of climbing according to my Garmin.
I finished in 5:26 which was 8th place open and about 40th overall but had a pretty disappointing race. Started off well with my pacing, was at the front of the first group but soon fell back with people racing off full pelt up the hills (can never understand that tactic myself unless you can pull it off ). Struggled a bit with tyres as I had a small block 8 rear and crossmark front but nothing to major, it was dusty and hard Sat. About the 45km mark I started passing loads of people, HR was in the low 150s (which I was happy with) and I seemed to be flying till about the 4 hour mark. All of a sudden I felt like I was going slower, I checked my HR and it was in the 128-135 range. I thought I must of just slacked off a bit unknowingly, I felt good leg and energy wise as I'd been sticking to my pacing and nutrition plan.
However, I just couldn't get my HR back up no matter what I tried. People started coming past me like I'd stopped and I just had to watch them disappear. Was a bit confusing, but the weekend prior I'd been for a short break to Melbourne and picked up a slight bug. Felt great on race day but thats the only thing I can put it down too. Its hard to know though and I'm only guessing that was the problem.
Hopefully be back next year but it depends on my work rota.
