Cracked Mountain Bike Rim

Postby Tigger » Thu Nov 11, 2010 9:14 pm

Could anyone tell me whether it is normal to crack a rim at the join on a Dually? I have a Scott Spark 40 which is 9 months old. I only weigh just over 70kg and have never cracked a rim before on much cheaper bikes. I was going to try to get a new rim on warranty. What does everyone think?

It's unusual, but not unheard of. You may face challenge on how hard you've been riding, over what sort of terrain. I'd look at the break edges and see if they're shiny. If so, it's a fatigue failure and not attributable to a one off, which boosts your chances of success.

There seems to have been a run of Scott and yeti frame failures on their duallies rear triangle of late. All fixed up under warranty no questions asked, but I wouldn't be buying a used bike in either brand.

Thanks Trailgumby for your quick response.

I can't see any obvious dents in the rim and the edge of the crack looks fairly shiny. I'll take it back to Blackman's and see what they can do for me.
