Dirt Baggies is a new mountain bike shell short with included bibshorts. Created by Tim Lane, a former design engineer for Felt Bicycles, Dirt Baggies first shipment just showed up in their warehouse last week and he’s open for business.

The lightweight (160g) baggy shell shorts are made of a very light nylon and does away with pockets or extra features that add weight. The black panels, visible on the tan shorts, are ballistic mesh, and the Rip Stop material throughout the rest is very breathable, too.

“My goal was to keep your legs as cool as if you were just wearing bib shorts alone,” said Lane. “The shells that come on most shorts are overbuilt for most purposes. You legs are you biggest muscles, so we want to keep them cool.”

The top bit needs to come up higher at the front, to just below the collarbone, and be coloured blue. Brewery logo across the chest is optional but terry towelling bucket hat and zinc cream are compulsory ;)

TBH, these strike me as a bit of a solution in search of a problem/market. There's a reason mtb overshorts are over-built, and have pockets. They need to survive offs, and pockets are handy for all-day rides and touring.

if you're that concerned about weight and cooling you're more than likely to be competing, and you'd just wear regular bibknicks.

I absolutely concur trailgumby, if I wear shorts, then its because of the offs protection and the pockets. Otherwise its bib knicks all the way. Why not just wear light weight shorts??

It's a good idea! I think they could make very good touring shorts, if that is the context in which Andrew is looking at them? Or for roadies who are bashfull about wearing knicks in public.

I don't put anything in my pockets when touring - I have bags on the bike for that, so no pockets is ok with me. I hate things in pockets chafing around my thighs and knees. And no waistband is a big plus for when I'm in them all day.

A bit on the expensive side though, since I'd want to take three sets of bibs on tour. But probably not much different in price from the Assos knicks I'm currently using.

i'm very confused about MTB shorts. a chamois is a must-have for me, so that means knicks. i don't really need over-shorts. i used to wear some for modesty/vanity, but since getting married i've abandoned any concerns over self-image. so i just wear lycra. am i doing the wrong thing? :o

Hehe - well perhaps you should ask your wife what she thinks about it. :).
