Best rides around Melbourne Inner Suburbs

Postby Claare » Tue Sep 11, 2012 11:27 am

Hey Guys,
Just getting into the MTB scene, living in the inner suburbs in Melbourne.
Was wondering if anyone had suggestions for rides, that take ~30mins to get to.

Jeez, where to start.

From Collingwood/Abbotford the is an amazing range of tracks up the Yarra starting from Dights Falls.

There was a really cool loop under the Westgate. Should still be there.

A lot of tracks start from the Fairfield Boathouse (you really should walk the bike near there) as walkers get a little peeved. Also, catch a train to Hurstbridge (from memory) and ride back along the Yarra.

I lived in Melbourne until 2006 and miss the riding achingly (as well as coffee, trams, footy, shopping, bike shops, food, markets......................).

PM if you like and I can get a few maps together.

Enjoy the rides.

I'm sure that you will receive plenty of suggestions as there are many dirt trails in and around Melbourne.

I do think that the most enjoyable MTB experience is to be found East of Westerfolds Park in Templestowe through Candlebark Park. If you can get your bike here then there will be many of the regular riders in the area who will gladly ride along. Or go on a voyage of discovery and explore on your own - you can't get lost.

We are 100m off the trail network and if it's a nice day we don't need much encouragement to shut the factory and throw a leg over a bike and ride. We also encourage riders new to the sport as it keeps the enthusiasm high. Claare if you are female and would prefer to ride with other girls in the area then that's easy to arrange as well.

There's a nice ride all the way through Brunswick and down toward Clifton Hill, with a handful of detours with some gravel and bridges and stuff.

A lot of the inner-city paths are depressingly utilitarian, and the one that runs north through Brunswick parallel to the train line has a series of lethal bottlenecks where you can brush handlebars when passing.
