How to determine if your RockShox SIDs are "A" or "B"

Postby possum-magic » Thu Feb 14, 2013 4:06 pm

I'm trying to order in a Service Kit for my RockShox SID RL 100mm 29er forks (2012). When I go to the most recent spare parts catalogue on the SRAM website, they list two different types of SID fork - a SID A and a SID B. Apparently the difference is with the inside diameter of the upper tubes. But of course without pulling my fork apart, this is not easy to establish.

So, I wanted to know if anyone out there can tell me if there is another way of determining what type I have from an external inspection of the fork. I have heard the following:
1. SID B have the 80, 100 and 120mm graduations on the stanchions, whilst the SID A only have 80 and 100mm graduations
2. The SID A type are the World Cup variety, which are only made in 26".

Interestingly, I only have 80/100mm graduations on my stanchions, and mine are not World Cup versions, so based on the above to criteria I'm none the wiser!!

How well do you want to service the fork?

If you just want to change the seals/wipers and o-rings the Basic Service Kit works on both model forks.

Basic Service Kit
Part # 00.4315.032.080 is for the 80/100mm model and the 80/100/120mm model.

Complete Service Kits
Part # 11.4015.300.000 is for the 80/100mm model only.

I was looking to get the full service kit to suit my fork. As you have rightly pointed out, there are two to choose from - the 80/100mm (or SID A) version and the 80/100/120mm version (or SID B) version. The question then became "which one do I get??"

After speaking with about 5 different people regarding this, I have the correct answer for my particular fork. That is, ANY SID 29" fork is of the SID B type, as they only made the SID A in 26". If you have a 26" SID fork, its more complicated. Things to look for are:
- hose clamp for securing disc brake hose (refer to part 6 on page 35 of the 2013 RockShox Spare Parts catalogue) means its a SID B. The SID A were supplied with 4 smalls studs for guiding a cable tie
- Year of manufacture. Apparently SID B only came into existence from 2010, so if your fork is earlier than this it will be SID A
- Solo Air forks are SID B only
- SID A are 100mm maximum. Any fork with 120mm travel will be SID B. To further confuse this, a 100mm travel SID B can quite easily be configured to 120mm, even if its been sold as a 100mm fork.
- SID A are only QR. You can't get SID A as 15mm bolt-through

Clear as mud :D
