New Trek Fuel EX8 29er vs Giant Trance X 0

Postby hitch » Tue May 28, 2013 12:57 pm

I'm feeling an upgrade coming on, as I have a 4 year old Scott Aspect hard tail, which is getting a bit old.

I've been looking around, and have seen a reasonably good deal on the Trance X 0. I then saw the EX8 29er - apparently only about a week old. I've ridden an EX8 26" rental before, and was very happy with it, but haven't ridden the Giant. Never having ridden a dual suspension before, I'm not too sure what I'm looking for, and these bikes are at a similar price point.

Any opinions either way?

Trek (can't find anything on the trek site...)

The Giant is better spec'ed, in particular the front shock is a FIT type on the Giant but the cheaper and heavier Evolution (open bath?) on the Trek. I've heard the Trek has a slightly better rear suspension feel but I've not ridden it myself. I would test ride them both if it were me - and while I was at it, weigh them both too (Giant would be lighter I'm guessing). The Giant has an unusually short wheel base for a 29er, which supposedly makes it ride more like a 26er in tight switch-backs, etc. I'd be interested in seeing the Trek geometry, to see which has the slacker head angle - slacker is better in my books.

I ended up going with the Trek - didn't want to dwell on the decision for too long... :)

Good choice - nicer looking bike I recon. Do you have any idea on the weight of it (without pedals)? Post a pic as well :)

Yeah, I was happier with the look too. And at that price point, and my standard of riding, I don't think there's a huge difference between the two. The trance had the reverb seat but... Yeah, wasn't sold on it.

Pic as requested. Not the best angle...

I also came across this article that lists weights for the new Trek range:

Weighed a Trance X0 for a customer today. Medium (18") frame, with basic alloy platform pedals & stock dropper post, 13.2 kg. The dropper post adds almost 400g over a rigid one.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Well since you already bought it doesn't matter anymore.. .... i recently got a trance , thought it was really a nice ride compare to an anthem.
didn't compare it to the Trek though..

Is it my imagination, or has the Trance seat tube angle gotten way slacker in the last couple of years. I have a 2012 Trance, and to my eye by comparison the new ones look like pure downhill rigs...

Haha. better going down i guess. seat angle is 73 on paper, and head angle 69.5.
I think its main reason is to make chainstay shorter...
i opt for trance over anthem is due to that, and i am of a smaller build...and this is a small frame..
so maybe that's the reason...

I currently ride a 2011 Trance X2 (XT/SLX mix) and have upgraditis for a 29er... The EX 8 and Trance X1 (comparable models really) are top of my list. I like the Trek frame and shocks but would prefer a 2 x 10 on the Giant (although I hate Elixir brakes). I will try to catch the demo days here in Canberra and test ride them both. Has anyone else compared them head to head?
