Help need with disk brakes

Can anyone tell me why I can't get my rear hydraulic disk brake to lock up or even slow me down, the lever when pulled come a long way in I have even had it touch the handle bar. The bike is one a few weeks old so it not worn out!

Sounds like they need bleeding, what make/model of brake?
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

Take it back where you bought it. It should never have left the shop with the brake in that state.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
