Recommend me a decent seat please !
Postby Fisher44 » Sun Aug 17, 2014 10:16 pm
Gotta find a comfortable seat - I ride 50/50 bitumen, dirt - and as a mature age rider on a Karate Monkey it won't be hard to improve on the one on the bike now. I realise seat comfort is a very subjective thing but any suggestions? I currently run 29x2.3 tyres so there is a bit of comfort there, but iv'e gotta find a better seat, cheers

Seat comfort is so dependent on matching its shape to your shape that the only way to find one that works is trial and error. Internet opinions are not worth a pinch of ant poo.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

You need either a bum that shapes itself to your saddle or a saddle that shapes itself to your bum.
...whatever the road rules, self-preservation is the absolute priority for a cyclist when mixing it with motorised traffic.

If you find you don't like the WTB, I'd reccomend the SDG Bel Air, I have 3 of them.

I recently purchased Prologo Zero II Pas. It does't look very comfy as it's really slim, but it suits my body shape really well. Super comfy. I find that no amount of padding makes it comfy if it doesn't suit your shape.

Unfortunately the bitter pill to swallow is;
You need to buy a seat and try it, if it is no good, try another. It is trail and error. I realise this is not aligning with your hip pocket, but the only thing that will know if a seat is comfy...... is YOUR bum, and your bum only. Threads like this only suggest the comfort of someone else bum.

Yep... some brands (Selle SMP, Specialized) have trial programs which helps somewhat - though will generally cost you a deposit if you end up opting for another brand.
Still, better than buying and selling a stack of $200+ saddles...

Going trial and error just ended up costing me a heap of money.
I finally just went into a shop and measured my pelvis. Talked to the (more senior) sales assistant and he recommended something in my size that was designed for my riding style.
I tried a demo version of that saddle...ended up buying that exact saddle...still riding it.
FYI Trek stockists will have Bontrager saddles which offer 30 day comfort guarantee. Buy, if it doesn't work for you after 30 days get a refund/credit/exchange for something else.
