Hi everyone,

I'm new to mountain biking I have Merida Matt 40, at present I have a pair of old toe clips fitted to the original pedals. I'm looking for a multipurpose clip less pedal that can be used with normal shoe for those times I duck to the shops or the pub. I'm thinking of some sort of Shimano pedal as I have a road bike with Shimano clip less pedals and there great.

I don't want to spend a heap as I'm more a social rider then a racer, just something reliable and easy to uses.

Can anyone recommend a pedal I should look at?

I use the shimano 530 pedals on my townie. Spd on one side, platform on the other.
The biggest problem is the platform isn't very grippy and is quite slippery when wet. A couple if strips of stick on grip tape are enough to fix it.

Thanks KGB, it looks if it's a pretty good starting point from what I've been reading and a good price. I wondering now if I just go a full double sided pedal and turn my old Repco road bike into a cruz round town bike.

I have the same pedals on my MTB. The flat side is great for that cruise with the kids. But even so when you are out on the bush tracks they are handy for those odd times you don't want to clip in when it gets a bit tricky and you need to drop a foot quickly for stability or even that short 100m coast from the car to the gang.

I use Shimano XT M785 Trail ... never looked back. Also Sticking with Shimano will mean that you should be able to buy cleats in just about any local bike shop you enter

Too many links to look at on my phone but if you go for a double sided pedal then the m520 pedals (basic shimano) are pretty awesome value. Good performance and durability and can be had for $30 shipped from several online guys. I grabbed a set for a mate from chain reaction for $22 - ridiculous! Retail here on the cleats alone is $20.

So I'm thinking of going the PD-M520 or 540 pedals with either of these two shoes?

If you're not sure about shoes, go to a shop & try some on (and do them the courtesy of buying from them too once you've found the best-fitting one). As far as pedals, I'd suggest the M780 XT ones; the "race" model is basically the same concept as the M520/540, but the body is a little bit wider, and the cleating mech slightly lower profile, so you get a much more stable connection to the pedals.

What Duck! said. Shoe fit is quite important as you start doing longer rides. It feeds into knee, hip and lower back comfort. Bike shoes need to be a tighter fit than running or other sports shoes.

Ok I'm going to call into Pushys tomorrow and see what they have. There is a pair of Giro MTB shoe at Anaconda that fit nicely as well.

The XT pedals are supposed to be pretty good as duck mentioned. I don't think there's much value in the 540 over the 520 though. The 520 can be had for less than $25 online. That's crazy cheap.
