Hey all,
Need a quick hand.
I've got a sram X9 rear mech mated to a SRAM PG-1030 11x36T rear casette.
I want to replace the x9 with the x9 type 2 rear mech, but unsure if I need a short, medium or long cage.
Any way I can check my current rear mech or can someone help from experience?
Thanks!!
Short , medium, long cage rear mech??

Pretty much. Although strictly speaking the long cage is the only one officially rated for a 36t rear sprocket, depending on who you listen to and how you interpret the chart, but the short cage can work with a 36t sprocket in a 1x setup.

My bold. First I've heard about that bit. Rear sprocket capacity is determined by the geometry of the upper body of the derailleur, not the cage, and typically the same body is used for at least medium & long-cage versions (often also short, but there are some DH-oriented versions that use a shorter body, therefore have a smaller max. sprocket capacity).Blakeylonger wrote:

I just go with the first principle - more front rings = more cage. Simple.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

example
24/38 rings, 11-36 cassette
(38-24)+(36-11)=39
39 is your total tooth capacity
SRAM Type2 derailleur capacity is
short <31
medium <37
long <45
If you ride a dual suspension that has chain 'growth' and your on the cusp of a capacity I'd opt for the longer version.
Just calculate your capacity based on the example above and choose the correct length
