2015 Giant XTC Advanced 29er 1 - widest tyres?

Postby tcdev » Wed Mar 01, 2017 4:33 pm

How does one go about determining the widest tyre that the above-mentioned bike will accommodate?

It came with 2.1" Schwalbe Racing Ralphs on Giant PXC-2 rims which I've well and truly worn through; I'm currently running 1.4" Schwalbe Marathon Mondials - bullet-proof for my almost exclusively on-road riding - but I'm now looking at swapping in a pair of Maxxis Ardent 2.4" for the occasional off-road jaunt and wondering whether or not they'll actually fit? I can't find any information on the Giant website which I find peculiar.

Rim capabilities aside, a mate has a 2014 Trek Superfly 7 and had issues with a 2.3" Bontrager tyre rubbing on the frame (IIRC the chain stay?) I know it's a different bike but don't want the same issue...

Perhaps I should just go with the 2.25" to be safe... :?

I run 2.25" tyres on my Scalpel and for the intended use they are perfect. Roll faster on the typical terrain and more forgiving handling.

2.4" will be heavy and with the chunkier tread will likely pedal slower compared to a 2.25, which is I think about the sweet spot for this kind of bike.

I have 2.4' on my Trigger, and it is slower to pedal, but it's not an apples-to-apples comparison because I'm using more Trail oriented rubber and wider rims in line with the bike's intended use.

I think I'm leaning that way anyway. It really will only be for the occasional off-road - assuming the Marathon Mondials aren't as much of a pig as they were to get on initially after almost 2 years of use (I did read that they get easier). I don't do a lot of technical stuff (yet) so it'll likely only be 20-40km of fire trail each time.

Thanks for the input!
