removing mtb tyre from rim

Postby defy1 » Tue Apr 18, 2017 4:58 pm

Is there some trick to getting a MTB tyre off the rim? I wanted to go tubeless, and almost ripped my thumbs trying to get the MTB tyre off the rim. The tyre is so firmly in the bead, I can't even get a tyre lever in there.
Any trips or tricks to get a tyre off?

Assuming you mean getting it off the bead first as once thats off you should be able to get your levers in and tyres off.

I usually squeeze the tyres on both sides close to the bead, i find it makes it easier in getting it off the bead making ready for the levers.

Sometimes they can be difficult.

Squeese the tyre to the centre of the rim all the way around.

Once you do that squash the tyre and pull it on both sides.

With luck you will almost be able to get it off without levers.

I can usually get them back on without levers.
Eat less. Move more and keep breathing.

If it's a tubeless compatible rim there will be an extra little ridge on the "shoulders" in the floor of the rim which locks the tyre beads in place. You'll need to push firmly with your thumbs as described above to unlock the bead. Once you've got a bit free you'll be able to poke a tyre lever under & get the rest off in the normal manner.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Thanks all, managed to figure it out. Yes, WTB ranger tyres and rims all tubeless compatible.

Placed rim flat on ground, one foot on one side of the tyre and another foot on the other, then pull up on the rim via spokes. Grab a handful of spokes to spread the load.
Glad I did this exercise in the comfort of my own home, rather than learn the hard way on the trail.

I've gone tubeless now :)
