Just throwing some ideas around in my head with a 1,000 km+ "gravel grinder" bikepacking type ride in mind. I have a choice of going on my Surly Long Haul Trucker or the Salsa Mukluk but if I went on the Mukluk I think I would like to go with a narrower faster tyre (currently running 4" tyres). I suspect that have 3" tyres would just give me the edge and a few more options in the more remote parts of the ride.
So I am exploring the idea of going with 29+ tubeless rims and tyres [it will need to be a build as I will run a SON 28 150 15 dynamo].
Any suggestions on the way to go with a 29+ build? Rims? Tyres options?

Hi Andrew, if you get 35mm rims the rim to tyre width is scale up of conventional MTB sizes with 21mm inner rim width, so you can run plus, or down to 700c gravel tyres. Since you have the fat wheelset, you don't need the 50mm rims to try maximise width and square off sidewall for float at low pressure. Or you could use a 50mm rear rim to keep the float bias options, and go 35mm rim front to keep the narrower options.
I was still able to ride the beach water line in easier summer conditions with 29x3 on 35mm rims, bit harder than the 50mm rims, and a bit harder again each size step than the 26x3.5, 26x4 or 26x4.7 fat.
For an all-round road trail bike wheelset, it gives you lots of options, and you have all the gear setup for your Mukluk. You can also run Rohloff XL with perfect chainline if you wish also

On my Jones Plus build I have 50mm Mulefüt rims with Maxxis Chronicle 29x3.0 (with a SON 28 150 as well).
Happy with the set-up with limited rides so far.

Did you get the rims here in Australia? Also did you do a tubeless conversion?avolve wrote:On my Jones Plus build I have 50mm Mulefüt rims with Maxxis Chronicle 29x3.0 (with a SON 28 150 as well).

Side answer about conversion, I have Mulefut rims stock on my first Stache, they are TLR tubeless ready and factory taped OEM, I custom taped mine a bit like the bead to bead ghetto tube style, but with a tape strip.
Like the Fatty Stripper does with latex, I've used tougher vinyl Surly rim strips for a wider rim to do bead to bead overlap. Another Mukluk rider posted success over several tyre life changes. I've got about 4500km on my current spring/summer commuter wheelset with 29x2.8 with the 35mm Nextie rims in my Rohloff Stache.

The lbs who did the build ordered the rims and built the wheels (I provided the dynamo, they ordered the rear DT Swiss hub), including tubeless conversion (a specific kit for the rims).Aushiker wrote:Did you get the rims here in Australia? I have experience with a ghetto tubeless conversion with my Surly Marge Lite rims [holed like the Mulefut] but I have now swapped them out for Ollie 80s as I wanted the "security" of a proper tubeless setup given my preference for remote riding.
I am not keen and this maybe being super cautious on my part of another ghetto build for my preferred riding so I think I will stick to rims that are tubeless ready from the get go.

They are TLR tubeless ready rims, conversion means tubeless valve and tape if not factory OEM taped. Stock comes taped with tube, valve separate for when tube removed and sealant is added.
I think you answered it youself though, another set of Ollie rims default option.

Just to clarify, my Mulefüt rims are not ghetto tubeless. They have model specific tape added by the lbs when the wheels were built.
