I've been around a while, and I'm more than happy to talk :)

Location?
Perth

Road, Mountain, Track... what's your style?
I ride the road. Never could get used to riding on gravel. One day I will hit the track, but I have a personal goal to reach before I will reward myself with that.

Current bike/s?
Scott CR1 (Dura Ace/Fulcrum Racing Zeros)
Amiata Modena (trainer bike - bog standard)
Avanti Blade Sport (mostly ignored - bog standard)
Trek XC mtb (totally ignored - on loan to father-in-law)
Tacx Fortius trainer...not exactly a bike but...

Riding since?
I was born...but I had some breaks along the way. Did triathlon in high school, sold that bike and thought I'd try mtb. Hated it so stopped riding until I went back to road in 2006.

Riding because?
I love it :D

Favorite ride?
Anywhere flat and along the beach :)

Occupation?
Business consultant (Records management)

Goals?
Ride more :)
2011 Busselton 1/2 iron-man triathlon
2011 Avon Descent (140km white water paddling event held over a weekend)

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?
Many years ago (I was 16 and refuse to say how long ago that was!!) I ride my roadie on a gravel driveway. Decided it wasn't a good idea so turned too sharp and immediately slid the bike out. Damn silly narriw tyres. I lay on the ground for about 10 minutes still fully clipped in, in perfect riding position, laughing my head off. No-one witnessed this...maybe it doesn't count s embarressing?

Best moment on the bike?
Every time I'm outside in perfect WA weather is the best moment.

Brisbane.

Road, Mountain, Track... what's your style?
I'm a roadie. Well, in the sense that I ride a road bike. I'm not a roadie who rides with other roadies. You won't see me at a coffee shop hanging out with a bunch of bikers. Just on my own or with BestMate :)

Current bike/s?
That'd be The Beast, a 2009 Cannondale Synapse 4 Carbon Feminine. I have an old Malvern Star MTB that lives on a never-used trainer.

Riding since?
Since I was about 7, but there were a few breaks in there. I regret now giving it up for as long as I did. I tell people that I've been riding for 30 years, but it's a bit of an embellishment. True enough, I started riding about 30 years ago, but there was a big hiatus between my late teens and my mid thirties.

Riding because?
Because I love it. A couple years ago, I decided I needed to lose weight (95Kg when I started) and BestMate reminded me how much I loved cycling. I got on my MTB (the afore-mentioned trainer bike) and followed him along the bike path on the riverside. Within 500m I was conked out on the side of the road, wheezing and overheating. I got back on the bike, and between him and my mum taking me out for rides, I got my bike fitness back. I also managed to lose 27Kg in the process.

Favorite ride?
Tough to say. My most common ride is out to Nudgee or Boondall and back, but I couldn't say it's my favourite. It's kind of boring. I think my favourite is probably the ride into town, then across the river to Southbank/West End, or to UQ to do the River Loop.

Occupation?
IT.

Goals?
I don't really have any riding goals. I'm happy just to noodle along and have fun. I've found in the past that setting goals for anything turns me ultra-competitive, and makes that thing un-fun. I want my riding to stay fun, which means I must not create an environment in which I become ultra-competitive. So perhaps my goal is simply to have fun. :)

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?
Can't say I've ever had one.

Best moment on the bike?
They're all good :D I could say my best moment was any one of: finishing last year's CQ; finishing last year's Wilson HTM Gold Coast ride (halving the previous year's time); doing yesterday's Great Brisbane Bike Ride, in which I finally defeated the evil hill near Dutton Park cemetery. I have had many proud moments on my bike, but once they're done, they're done. None of them really stand out as a glowing achievement.

Which section have you spent most of your time in on the forums? Or where do you suspect you'll spend most your time?
That'd be the Link The Photo Game.

Road, Mountain, Track...what's your style?
Road and Mountain. Firstly was mountain bike riding but then bought a roadie in August last year and have predominantly been on it since then. Planning on getting back to the single track though in the next month or so just to mix it up.

Current bike/s?
2009 Giant TCR Alliance 2 - lovingly named wowser...
2003 Giant NRS 03 - has no name other than the dualy

Riding since?
2003...when I met my boyfriend and current partner. I bought my first ever bike which was a front suspension kona hahana (lovely red ride!) and first hit the mtb trails at Glenbrook national park in Sydney. I then caught the bug quite quickly and upgraded the bike to the 2003 GIant NRS 03 dual suspension mtb and really enjoyed the trails. I entered a couple of endurance events but have sworn off them since - I really should ride with L plates on when I'm on the MTB trails as I'm not particularly good and lacking confidence doesn't help on tricky singletrack sometimes! Bought the road bike August last year and have really enjoyed watching my fitness levels increase, weight drop off and also the joy at tackling some of the hard terrain which exists in abundance here in the Snowies.

Riding because?
I absolutely love it!! I'm at my best when I'm on the bike and there is nothing sweeter than that feeling you get after a great ride!

Favourite ride?
For the road riding I do it would probably be some of the more challenging rides this way. I'm at the moment tackling the ride which takes me from Jindabyne to Charlotte Pass which is a tough 40km slog mostly uphill. I haven't gotten to Charlotte's yet but slowly slowly I'll get there. On the MTB it would without a doubt be the sweet flowing single track at sparrow hill in Canberra.

Occupation?
Gosh well up until two weeks ago I was a self employed remedial/sports massage therapist. I have recently packed that in to save my lower back and am now employed as an office administrator. Really need to figure out what I want to do longer term...

Goals?
Well to be able to ride up to Charlotte Pass is the first goal. I happily ticked off my first 100km ride last year and have participated in a few road bike events which are great. I also want to tackle the imperial century and if I'm lucky enough a double century by the end of the year.

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?
Without a doubt my first clipstack...on my in'-laws driveway in front of spectators. It was the first time I clipped in to my MTB clipless pedals and I wasn't even moving! How stupid!!! Haven't clipstacked since then although of course there have been close calls - I'm constantly cursing my road bike clipless pedals...must upgrade to speedplay me thinks!

Best moment on the bike?
Wow well I"ve had a few. First MTB ride I ever had way back in 2003 was great. First time I rode 50kms on the road bike and then followed by the 100km on the roadie. Think the best feeling I had was finishing the 2010 Tour Down Under mutual community challenge tour - 111kms. There was section of 20 odd kms right near the end which proved to be soul searching stuff. The wind was blowing in at 70kms/hr and you had to hold the front wheel sideways just to stay upright. I was dehydrated hot and miserable watching people drop like flies at the side of the road. Felt extra satisfying to cross the finish line with crowds cheering us on! Yep that moment was sweet!!!

Which section have you spent most of your time in on the forums? Or where do you suspect you'll spend most your time?

Hi ladies. :D

Where am I? That's usually what i ask myself. :P Canberra.

Road/Mtb/whatever - roads. They are straight and i am hopeless in the bush.

Current bike - 11 year old giant plus a cheap bush basher. I still have my first bike that i got when I was 8 and that's a bit of a restore project in my garage. Plus my sisters and my brother's too. Think banana seat, sissy bars and 3 speeds. I think I've spent more time on a horse in my life than I did my bike. But alas, he went to God. :|

Riding since? yonks ago. Commuted for over 20 years I reckon. Dabbled in races for a few summers (loved crits) but now I just plod to work and back and a longish one on weekends.

why? its free. (hopefully) i can lose a few kgs.... just because i can, and because I like it.

Occupation? I get paid currently by 5 different organisations so I'm a jill of all trades I guess. Or maybe that just makes me sound disorganised?  2 main jobs though.

Embarrassing - breaking a leg in front of others by someone passing me a drink bottle.... try and work that one out!

Goals - get faster, get fitter, get thinner... :P

Best ride - 2001 Round the Bay Melbourne - or the summer road season of 2002/2003. I was fast (er) then!

Road, Mountain, Track... what's your style?
Road and MTB

Current bike/s?
Too many to list. I restore old bikes and my favourite is my Bundy.

Riding since?
The age of 5. Learnt to ride on my sisters dragster. Rode everywhere until I was living next to where I was working and then cycling was non existant until 2005.
Ceased in 2009 due to a knee condition. Nowdays I get just as much enjoyment helping others who want to take up cycling.

Riding because?
Commuting, enjoyment, health/fitness

Favorite ride?
When out cycling with my niece and/or nephews along the cycleway.

Occupation?
Work in community services/cycling.

Goals?
To be able to cycle without using my bad knee.

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?
The day I rode without a helmet. (I had given it to a kid earlier that day.) I had told my friend I would be fine, we were on the cycleway, nothing could happen...
Well it did. They were doing repairs and I misjuged and faceplanted in front of my friend. No cuts, but a huge lump on my head, mild consussion and black eyes for a week. I hid in shame and have never taken a chance like that since and always keep a spare helmet in case.

Best moment on the bike?
The day my sister gave me a push when I was sitting on her bike, said 'Go', and I had no choice but to pedal like mad save falling. It worked and was a quick lesson in learning to ride.

Road, Mountain, Track... what's your style?
Road and Track...Road for social rides and racing...Track for going around in circles and for feeling faint and nauseous.

Current bike/s?
MTB - Giant Alias 2007 is rarely ridden since the road bug bit.
Track - Apollo Record 2009...no brakes, no gears, no wonder it's fun...
Road - Specialized Roubaix Expert 2008 ...has been the cause of my cycling passion, or is that obsession, since September 2008...
Road - Trek Madone 6.9 2010...my new ride since last week.

Riding since?
2007 on the MTB for short distances two or three times a week until September 2008...then 14900km on the road in the last 18 months.

Riding because?
I enjoy it...I like competing, I like the socialising, I like the challenge...cycling has facilitated the arrival of so many positive aspects of my life.

Favorite ride?
Bucca T...the local name we use to refer to a 40km ride over Bruxner hill...through the banana plantations, then down through the lush green vibrant rainforest, on through forests of flooded gum, and along quiet country roads through creekside paddocks, where the cattle chew their cud and stare as we pass.

Occupation?
IT for the last 15 years...too many to mention previously.

Goals?
To be stonger, faster, better...to ride with my friends...to always enjoy the ride.

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?
Getting beaten in a sprint by an 11 year old...but not really embarrassing, I am always ready to encourage and praise the youngsters for their efforts.

Best moment on the bike?
I hope I haven't yet had my best moment...but nearly all moments on the bike are satisfying, fullfilling, inspiring, motivating, and breathtaking....hurtling down a tight winding mountain road on the drops...

Which section have you spent most of your time in on the forums? Or where do you suspect you'll spend most your time?
None in particular although the profile stats say 'General Discussion'...

And this last question that I have added...

What has cycling done for you?
Over the last 18 months since getting a road bike I have...
made many acquaintances...
made a few friends...
increased my fitness...even if I do still puff like a steam train after a sprint...
pushed myself to the limit time after time...
been motivated and inspired to write of my adventures, despite never having any inclination to do so in the preceeding 55 years...here are a couple...
12 Months on the Road
The Adventures of Princess Lycra
lastly but definitely not least, had a great time...

Hi all,

Here's me. I've been lurking for a while but may as well take the opportunity to talk about my favourite topics - me and my bike!

Location?
Melbourne

Road, Mountain, Track... what's your style?
Road but I'm keen to give mountain biking a go

Current bike/s?
Bianchi Viale Abruzzi (in Celeste, of course). I made my LBS take off the racks, chain guard etc so that it looks more road bike-ish. Next step, a proper road bike...

Riding since?

I loved riding growing up but I forgot about it at about the same time as I learned to be scared (at about age 18). I've been riding as an adult since early 2010

Riding because?
I signed up for a triathlon and then realised I needed a bike. So I bought one and have barely gotten off it since

Favorite ride?
I'm yet to find a ride I don't like

Occupation?
Project Manager

Goals?
Longer, better, faster, stronger...! I want to do some more triathlons later this year and hit up Around the Bay in a Day. Along with anything else that looks good. Oh, and I want to induct as many of my friends into my bike riding gang as possible.

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?

Getting a flat on my first ever group ride (and not having a spare tube as I'd used it to change a flat the night before) and then having my bike bag fall off on my second ever group ride...

Best moment on the bike?
All of them so far...

Which section have you spent most of your time in on the forums? Or where do you suspect you'll spend most your time?

Probably this one now!

I bought a MTB after loving a very tough little taster and because I wanted versatility. I suspect I will be spending more time on my local cycleways for at least a little while though.

Current bike/s?
2010 Avanti Forte 3. It was "born" just over a week ago :D

Riding since?
About a month ago I decided it was time to get myself a new hobby. I rode a little bit as a kid but have hardly touched a bike for over 10 years.

Riding because?
I wanted to be totally self-indulgent and buy myself a really good present for my 30th birthday. When I realised how many cycleways were close to my house and how much wonderful "me" time riding could give me I chose a present that will keep on giving.

Favorite ride?
I'm currently exploring the M7 but am so new that i'm just happy being on the bike at the moment.

Occupation?
Safety & Environment Manager

Goals?
Not being in pain! Not using my brakes so much. Being able to ride faster and further.

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?
I'm so new that all of them are at the moment. Struggling to ride in a straight line or do other things that I thought would be easy is all very embarrassing.

Best moment on the bike?
Riding along and realising that I was right when I thought this would be something I would love.

Originally to commute, then got into mtbing, then got serious so started roadie training, Audax riding, road racing, moutain bike touring and orienteering. Toured overseas twice in the last 90s. Now riding to get fitter again, lose some weight and introduce my 6yo daughter to the pleasures of lycra :P

- Get back to 65kg
- 2010 Tour de Timor

Best moment on the bike?
Recently? Following my daughter on a 6km cruise along the lake shore bike path on a glorious autumn day - her longest solo ride to date!

Hi all,

I thought this would be as good a place as any for my first post on the forum (I've been lurking for a little while).

Location?
SA

Road, Mountain, Track... what's your style?
Road.

Current bike/s?
2010 Azzurri Primo Pro
A Ciombola steel-framed bike I bought in the late 90s which was only replaced yesterday when I bought the Azzurri. I'm sure I'll still ride it from time to time.

Riding since?
I started in the late 90s, but then gave up for a looooong time, and have only just got into it again (on and off, but hopefully soon to be more "on" soon) in the last year or so.

Riding because?
Initially because of the guy I was seeing at the time, and now because I enjoy it.

Favorite ride?
I don't really have one, but riding near the beach is nice.

Goals?
Improve my fitness and hill-climbing ability (well, first would be to get some hill-climbing ability, and then improve on that).

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?
None particularly bad, but I if I fall off, it seems to be for no logical reason, and usually when stationary.

Best moment on the bike?
My first test ride of a carbon bike a few weeks ago; I did a 50km ride that would have left me pretty spent on my current bike, but on the carbon bike I felt fantastic afterwards. Before the test ride I was wondering whether I'd notice any difference on a carbon bike, but I definitely did!

Which section have you spent most of your time in on the forums? Or where do you suspect you'll spend most your time?

Afternoon ladies,

time I added my own introduction!

Location?
Sydney

Road, Mountain, Track... what's your style?
Road but keen to give mountain biking a go

Current bike/s?
2009 Specialized Ruby with SRAM

Riding since?

Dec 2008

Riding because?
Cycling has always appealed but I was very scared of the sydney roads. I had an accident in 2007 which meant I couldn't run so it was as good time as any to get a bike. I also signed up for a triathlon which was made it essential.

Favorite ride?
Akuna Bay and West Head. I also like any ride where there is someone to gossip with.

Occupation?
R+D Manager

Goals?
for 2011 I want to do the Queenstown-> Wanaka Alpine classic as well as a sub 3hr olympic triathlon. Would also like to give the tasmanian hell in the hills tri a crack.

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?

The first ride with cleats in centennial park. The first time I stopped someone had to catch me. Then trying to get started I fell over infront of the coffee cart where most of Sydney City Cycle Club were enjoying coffee.

Best moment on the bike?
Nothing comes to mind... I find riding in Sydney a little scary so I always relax when the temperature drops and I can smell the national park. So definatley need to do more riding.

Commuting off main roads... there are plenty of cycle paths around, I ride on roads, but not busy roads like Gympie Road. I'm not mad.

Current bike/s?
10-yr old or so Mongoose mountain bike (gears are shot, can't be fixed), Austral dutch-type bike (I love it, but it's too slow), Pinarello Treviso.. yay!!!

Riding since?
I wouldn't say I'm a 'rider', but I love to ride. I refuse to wear the gear, and I don't care how sore my arse gets.

Riding because?
Because I have a need for speed and the wind in my hair. How can anyone catch a bus from the inner city to work, I"ll never understand.

Favorite ride?
MBC - Along the beach through Wynnum and Manly

Occupation?
Indigenous Education - research

Goals?
Sight-reading music, getting to grade 1 piano by the end of the year. Coming in about 20 mins in the Bridge to Brisbane 5K run this year.

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?
I can't remember any - touch wood!

Best moment on the bike?
I'd rather have sex.

Which section have you spent most of your time in on the forums? Or where do you suspect you'll spend most your time?
Buying a bike - perhaps I'll hang out in the random lounge, if there is such a thing.
I'm a girl.

Road. Have just bought my third road bike. I used to have an Indi Condor steel iridescent black road bike that I loved, before my daughter was born. She is now 22 and I've taken up cycling again. Started in January 2009 to get fit and see if I wanted to cycle. I bought a Giant Defy 1 but didn't really feel as if it was the bike I wanted.

Current bike/s?
Trek Madone 4.5 WSD and it is a dream to ride.

Riding since?[/b]
January 2009

Riding because?
I wanted to get fit and was wanting a new hobby in my life since my daughter left home. I decided that I loved it and now I ride 21 kms each morning before work and I ride with a group on Saturday mornings. We ride from Subiaco to Fremantle and back around the river. It is 50 kms and I'm loving all the learning and challenging all of my fears.

Favorite ride?
I like to ride on all sorts of hard-surfaced roads and dedicated cycle paths to favourite places for coffee and to visit friends. I love my Saturday morning rides around the river.

Occupation?
Early childhood teacher and education consultant for children with learning difficulties. I also work part-time as a telephone counsellor.

Goals?
I want to get really good at riding with my group and becoming less afraid of riding behind people's wheels and riding on major roads. I just want to be the best rider that I can be. I have already achieved my fitness and weight loss goal and have loads more energy. I was having a lot of pain in my hips and knees before I began riding and all of that disappeared after the first month. Another goal that I have achieved is changing over to clipless pedals. I was very scared but now am managing them well. Fell off 3 times on the first day and once more a week a go when my bike tilted to the right and over I went. I have also learned to not wear my backpack and my next goal is to learn how to drink water from my bottle and ride at the same time. I think that getting all of the snot from your nose and blowing it out while riding is gross but that is another goal; to learn how to deal with the snot. It seems to go with the riding.

Most embarrassing moment on the bike?

When I was four, I sneaked into the shed of the neighbours who lived at the back of our house. I had previously been told not to get on their bikes but being me, I decided that I could do it. I got on and it was a bit too big and I landed in the rose bushes and couldn't get out. After yelling really loud, someone came and rescued me. Falling off using my new clipless pedals on the first day when I got them, outside the bike shop because my brain couldn't compute. After the second fall, the guys picked me up. On the same day, I fell off on the path outside the Subiaco Football oval next to the lights and was wedged between the bike and the fence. Took me 5 minutes to figure out how to get extricated. All of the drivers were watching.

Best moment on the bike?
Back in 1982, Two friends and I rode from Lauceston to Hobart on touring bikes. I loved the scenery. Recently, completing the Saturday ride and riding over the bridge over the freeway and managing my pedals without either falling off or dying with fright. I also kept up with the group and beat some of the others up the big hills. I especially love the feeling once I have completed any ride and I love it when the big rides are done and we have coffee all together with all of the groups.

Lucky you. I love your new bike. I have a Trek Madone 4.5 WSD and I love it, but yours is so cool. What difference have you noticed between riding it and some of your other road bikes?

The Specialized Roubaix Expert is the only other road bike I have had, so not a lot to compare the Trek to...but the Trek 6.9 is a bit quicker up the hills and quicker to accelerate...I expect this is due to it having less flex which ensures more of my pedalling effort gets to the road...the frame at the bottom bracket is very wide and deep. The Trek is a little bit lighter too. The Trek ride is slightly harder also due to the increased stiffness, but not uncomfortable at all. The Specialized provided a very soft ride due to the forks not being as straight as the Trek, and the seat stays being thinner which allowed more flex.

I guess that as you go up different levels in the Madone series, the bikes become smoother and you notice the difference in performance. I have noticed that with my new bike, take-off is much faster and that hills that leave the others struggling are easy as and whilst other riders are pedalling away, my bike seems to coast without me needing to pedal for much longer. I have also noticed that cornering is much more responsive and the bike hugs to the corners tightly and goes around them much more easily. If you don't mind me asking, how much did you have to pay for your bike? Mine cost $3,200 but I have had the saddle changed to a Selle Italia and I also had Look Keo pedals put on afterwards, so maybe $3,500 all up.
