Hello ladies, this old pensioner needs advice. I am about to build up a Principia frame that takes 650c road wheels. I note that a lot of you use them and I wonder if you could advise me on a set to buy. Nothing too flash, remember "pensioner" so reasonable price. Shimano hub preferably, alloy will do and weight not really a concern but no boat anchors.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Oh, and apologies for butting in on your forum.
Al.

I have 650c Mavic Open Pros on my bike for everyday wheels. They seem pretty reliable and stay true but that's perhaps as much due to the wheelbuilder as anything else. Plus I'm pretty light.
But lots of other people I know have the same wheels as 700c so I'm thinking they are OK.
Got no idea how much they cost however.

Thanks Eleri, the open pros seem to be the most common 650c's around. Local bike shop has offered to build me a set using Velocity "deep-v" rims and shimano hubs. Any body out there use the "deep-v's"?

I've got 650c deep-v. A little on the heavy side but a bit more durable. Personally I prefer the aesthetics of the narrower open pro.
Deep-v's are also available in lower spoke counts, not that it's really worth it considering the rim weight.
Lace some 105 hubs to a23 32 is my recommendation, can be done for around $5-600 similar to the racier bracciano 650's available off jacks in a few months.
If you need something cheaper, get in touch with the companies/distributors that sell junior 650c road bikes ( cell/pro-lite/hillbrick ) they may be able to do you some wheels for around $150-300.
