I'd like to take up cycling...

Postby Susan Ellen Lyon » Thu Dec 12, 2013 7:12 am

I'd like to take up cycling. I have a disease similar to dwarfism - a child's size and somewhat youthful looks - which makes it difficult to use a standard adult bike and many bikes for female children are either lots of pink or cutesie poo accessories that would be embarressing,

can anyone help me?

Hi Susan

Have you looked into a custom build perhaps with 650cc wheels instead of the standard 700?

Some brands have women's specific frames down to a size 44 I think, not sure if that would still be too big though :(

What style/type of bike are you after?

Last weekend watched one of my clubmates, a lady of similar stature to yourself battle it out with the state U13 criterium champion (he was small for his age) and neither rode bikes with 700c wheels, both rode scaled down road bikes with 650c wheels and they left other riders on full sized bikes in there wake.

So if you want a road bike, there are options out there. A number of companies make bikes for junior racing (as well as smaller statue women), not all bike shops have them in stock (not a high turnover item). But you can ask and you might be surprised by what is out there.

G'Day Susan, we'd all love you to take up riding too :D

Beat me to it
