A £50 penalty may have to be paid by parents of young cyclists in Northern Ireland who do not wear safety headgear, it has been revealed.
Helmets would become compulsory for all if politicians go ahead with the proposals.

Dunno. What advice would you give the pollys who are considering the mandatory helmet laws? I was thinking that a warning that it would generate a lot of helmet threads on cycling forums would be appropriate. They should know what they are in for... ![]()

... if you want to be able to characterise cycling as dangerous, and reduce the uptake of cycling in the long term - with the inevitable impact of higher levels of obesity and degradation of community health. For him with a hammer, every problem is a nail. In the case of pollies, the hammer is the passing of laws. While I think everyone should wear helmets, it should be voluntary. I'm with Mike. They should ban cars. Or at least force drivers to wear helmets too. More drivers suffer head injuries than cyclists by some margin I reckon.
