Bid to make bike helmets compulsory

Postby casual_cyclist » Wed Sep 01, 2010 3:16 pm

http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/local-national/northern-ireland/bid-to-make-bike-helmets-compulsory-14913087.html

A £50 penalty may have to be paid by parents of young cyclists in Northern Ireland who do not wear safety headgear, it has been revealed.
Helmets would become compulsory for all if politicians go ahead with the proposals.

What happened to that 1000 post helmet thread?

Dunno.

What advice would you give the pollys who are considering the mandatory helmet laws?

I was thinking that a warning that it would generate a lot of helmet threads on cycling forums would be appropriate. They should know what they are in for...

For him with a hammer, every problem is a nail. In the case of pollies, the hammer is the passing of laws. While I think everyone should wear helmets, it should be voluntary.

I'm with Mike. They should ban cars. Or at least force drivers to wear helmets too. More drivers suffer head injuries than cyclists by some margin I reckon.

Well if it goes ahead, let's just hope that research will be funded to prove or disprove the merits of such legislation.

Yeah Right!

I'm opposed to mandatory helmet laws, however whilst it is still legislation in Australia, I'll be a law-abiding citizen and wear mine.
