Want to change the road rules?
The National Transport Commission is currently conducting a Review of the Australian Road Rules and Australian Vehicle Standards Rules.
Why should that interest me?
All states and territories base their laws on these national rules.
So if you want to have the current road rules changed, here is your chance.
Here is an interesting article that may be of interest;
http://www.abc.net.au/environment/artic ... 312420.htm
What are some possible suggestions?
How about a minimum one metre overtaking rule?
Motorist opening car doors on you?
Bells on bicycles? still useful for safety?
I'm planning on putting in a few suggestions. The discussion paper is open for comment on the NTC website until 16 December 2011.
Being discussed here as well and raised in herealso
I would suggest copying the submission into one's State Minister for Transport. More chance of a good outcome if the Minister's are persuaded to make changes.
Important enough that it warrant it's own thread really. As discussed in the whinge thread, many of us don't reader either of those =
their narrow focus lies outside our interests.
More broadly, the Road Rules are about all Road Users (not just moron motorists), and not just about helmet issues.
There are issues about pedestrian and cyclists interactions that need some consideration (e.g. the 10 kph
limits being posted on some shared paths). And there are a number of other areas where some clarification
of motorists obligations to cyclists would be worthwhile.
We might also need to be mindful that there might be some submissions from the anti-cycling brigade that
seek to erode our rights to use the road. For example, in limiting bunch sizes, or to put a stronger obligation
on cyclists to use shared pathways where available.
While the one and only helmet thread should remain the right place to discuss any helmet issues you have
with the Road Rules and its review, I'd welcome any discussion here related to any other aspect
of the Road Rules.
Thanks for the links ekib.
Somebody has to do something, and it's just incredibly pathetic that it has to be us -Jerry Garcia
Ahh first thread I linked is about this discussion paper so it does have its own thread already so I am a little unclear as to you point about narrow focus
To quote the opening post from the thread I linked to...
Well you best be quick because submissions close on 16 December - this Friday.
So if you want the current road rules changed, here is your last chance!
