For informed discussion/interest sake, the Department of Infrastructure and Transport has released the Road Deaths Australia—2011 Statistical Summary. A glimmer of good news ... cyclists deaths declined in 2011.

Interesting though morbid reading.
Cyclist deaths, though declining 2010-11 remained more or less constant over the last decade, and the number is too low (low 30's per year) to be able to reliably apply statistical analysis to it which I guess is a good thing in itself.
Looking at the historical data though in the early 80's cyclist deaths were up to 100 or so, some 2-3 odd times the rate now, so it has fallen roughly in line with the rest of road fatailities since then, also a good thing. I'd like to see some stats on cyclist per km travelled which may be in there but I haven't found it yet.
The saddest thing for me is that my eldest sister and her boyfriend made up 1 each of the 730 passenger and 1,134 driver deaths in 1986... It makes me very glad that the number have been falling so steadily since then.

Two issues here:
First WA deaths might be the only marginal rise but, given the corresponding large rise in population over the period it is quite possible that WA had one of the best reductions in accident rates.
Second, the cycling deaths (and seriously injured) may well be seriously under calculated. The data is based on reported fatalities and serious injuries which is based on incorrect statistics. Unfortunately data is only collected for road trauma that does not include shared paths, bike paths and off road paths.
Until full pedestrian/bicycle/car occupant trauma data is collected for all vehicular areas (as above) there will be under reporting of trauma in some of the greatest pedestrian and cyclist risk areas. Shared paths are much higher risk areas that normal roads for cyclists but most cyclists feel safer there.
Why would path trauma be counted with road trauma? What makes you think that more people are killed on bike paths than on the road anyway? The data related to cycling trauma would be very accurate as every death from cycling is reportable to the coroner.

The main risk on a shared path is the intersections with the roads and driveways. ie the stats you look for will largely be filed under normal road accidents as "failed to give way when entering the roadway". In the only significant study of cyclist and pedestrian fatalities in Australia, they did not find an instance of a cyclist being killed by a pedestrian/cyclist collision.
