In another era....

What is cycle safety? What is road safety? Where should the responsibility really lie?

A lot of people in our community today get the responsibilities all mixed up. Often a look at history is worthwhile as shown in this article.
The automobile industry eventually began waging a psychological campaign to get pedestrians out of the streets. First, it invented the term "jaywalking" (a reference to the idea of jaybirds as loud idiots) to make fun of pedestrians walking in the street as being stuck in the past.

Second, schools helped train new generations of children to avoid the streets when the American Automobile Association (AAA) became the top supplier of safety curriculum for U.S. schools in the 1920s, Norton explained. The AAA also spread the idea of school safety patrols to help keep kids out of the street.
Mandatory helmet law?
"An unjustified and unethical imposition on a healthy activity."

I think the main questions, which are not addressed in the article, is will will the software used to implement the self driving cars have the ability to lean out of the window and yell abuse as it passes a cyclist and will it be able to post responses to news articles demanding that cyclists pay "rego"? If not I predict that in the future we will look back at the present with feelings of nostalgia. (You call that abuse! When I was young ...)
