What stance is there on "Lobster Gloves" i like my Gore pair but it never seems cold enough to get them out. Though they are a semi-mitten as well as a glove.

I've still got the 5cm scar on me right forefinger, full flexion is still a tad uncomfortable years later. I was wearing gloves too.

I think we need mandatory chain mail suits for swimmers. I guarantee it will stop virtually 100% of shark attacks. Let's not forget that some 12 people died from shark attacks in Australia in 2011. As stated - given this will be 100% effective I think it should be mandated immediately.

Anyone who swims without a chain mail suit will be subject to a fine, and if they are attacked no rescue or medical help will be forthcoming so the drain to the public purse will be eliminated.



They already exist... read about it here. I think the manufacturers should start lobbying the Australian government and tooling up immediately!

WRONG. as the video shows, the suits are only designed to protect against little baby gummy sharks. they are useless against scarier great whites and the like. also the majority of shark attacks are known to be the fault of the shark, so why are we not punishing them instead of making the victim wear ridiculous suits?

Actually I think you missed the subtlety in my argument. Unlike MHL which only stopped about 40% of cycling overnight MCMS laws would stop virtually 100% of beach goers from swimming overnight too. You can't get nibbled by a great white if you aint in the water.

The other beauty of the legislation is that it would apply to all swimming - so would include swimming in swimming pools as well... just as MHL applies to people peddling at 10kph with the kids in the park or to the local shops. Just as helmets are good for people racing or doing downhill MTBing - what's good for the deepwater scuba diver is just as good for the family having a paddle in the local council pool.

Seriously this proposal will eliminate the chances of shark attach and save over ten lives in Australia each year. Why not?

The funniest thing about the world of scuba is that I don't think there are any legally mandated equipment items for the sport. Even the air-tanks are optional

The only mandatory item is probably the PFD while you're in the dive boat

I used to work for quicksilver in port Douglas.
The PADI setup sets stds for divers and the dive operator sets the rules whilst under their supervision on their craft.
Diving is too complicated for a council suit to regulate from his CBD office.
