We just heard that the Californian Assembly passed SB1464 by a vote of 50-16. If Governer Jerry Brown signs off on the amended senate Bill 1464, history tells us that the majority of America's States will follow suit. This will strengthen Australian group's calls for minimum safe passing distances as a result.

I'm not really sure as to how much help this will be in regard to a SAFE passing distance.

3 ft is still 4 inches less than 1 metre, and in some instances 1 metre can be cutting it a little close as in high speed semi's or buses.

3 ft is still a stating point as a minimum, better than the current nothing.... "6 inches is quite OK as long as I don't hit you". Australian groups are campaigning for 1m for urban areas and 1.5m for roads >80kmh.

Of course their next step is to get the law enforced :|

The 3ft rule is essentially the same thing for all intents and purposes Greyhound. Metric folk use the 1m rule, cavemen folk like the yanks and poms use a 3 ft rule. Don't concentrate on the mm in between.

This. Not ideal but a least a standard for reference, if Mr Plod can be made to give a rats. (Does not apply if overtaking vehicle is speeding.)
