It's simply laziness and its laziness that works when so many cyclists are appreciative and actually think it makes a difference. The less intelligent are easily appeased.
There are easily googled international standards and guidelines for these things which proves my point. Imagine if the Gateway motorway had been divided into 12 lanes instead of 6 in some places and motorists said "yay this is fantastic! No more congestion ever!"

Brisbane CBDBUG (http://www.cbdbug.org.au) is organising a Ride for Richard, this Friday 17th May 2013.

The ride will start at 7.30am this Friday (17 May, 2013) at/near the Kenmore roundabout and terminate at the Centenary Bikeway junction (approx 3km). They will ask the QPS Bike Squad to ride with us.

Please spread this far & wide.

And for anyone looking for a safe way to get to the starting point from the Centenary bikepath (Western Freeway bikepath), this is my suggested route:

https://maps.google.com.au/maps?saddr=U ... 6&lci=bike" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

If you don't want to ride up and over the hill on Cedarleigh Rd, you can use the footpath on the northern side of Moggill Rd. Its narrow and slow in spots but definitely rideable.

That bike marking only serves to endanger cyclists ( for the ones who use it) and anger motorists (when cyclists don't use it). The road designers who design such monstrosities are culpable.

I actually had to look closer at the pic to make sure it was here. They're normally painted halfway down the curb face.

But, but, the cyclists in Woodridge are only very wee.

It actually tapers out completely just round the bend.

Shooting out of the reds across the intersection with Wembley Rd a couple of weeks ago it made my day to be greeted with 'Ride of the Valkyries' blaring out as I passed the school. My day was almost immediately cut short as I approached that centre island in the photo [from the other direction]. I'd come out of the shoulder in plenty of time to pass a parked car, knew there was a vehicle coming up from behind but continued in the lane because it was obvious I'd have to do the same in less than 30m if I dropped back into the shoulder and the next parked car was adjacent to that island...and I was doing about 35 [music inspires me :) ] in a 50 zone so not likely to hold anyone up for more than a few seconds....and as I was almost between the parked car and that island a learner taking a lesson almost clipped the handlebars as she rushed to wedged herself through. I was almost a metre out from the line at the time in preparation for the parked car.

After saying a few naughty words to the skies I caught up and demonstrated to the instructor just how close they'd come. His indication that it was somehow his pupil's fault didn't go down well so I left him in no doubt that I thought he was responsible for allowing it to happen.

I missed getting the name of the driving school as I only had one thought spinning wildly round my head - No wonder it gets so hairy out here if they're actually teaching kids to drive like that.

E-Petetition signed and passed on to anyone who's likely to care.

I have decided I will not be able to attend Friday's ride due to a family commitment at short notice. Please understand that although i fully support the ride and deeply regret not being able to attend, I sadly cannot support calls for only 1 metre to be made law. 1 metre would not have saved Richard Pollett. My sincere belief is that 1.5 metres must be legislated or I am doing the Polletts and other families a disservice. I hope you can all show your support for the Pollett family on the day. Please ride respectfully.

So a meter matters, but 1.5 to stay alive? All good womble.

Either would have saved Richard who was passed with a distance of zero. As you say this is about community awareness of the issue and the impact that SMIDGAF can bring. Your petition calls for 1.5m and that's what we've signed.

Why we need to raise awareness to please not run over cyclists with cement trucks is another issue in itself.

Thanks Rhubarb. I fully support and applaude the CBDBUG for organising a wonderful ride and for supporting us so far. Thanks in no small way to them we have just hit 3000 signatures in 5 days. Incredible stuff to this point.

petition signed! 1.5metres is a good start, but I agree with comments about a full lane change being more appropriate. I can't get there tomorrow due to kids commitments sadly.

For a rider of reasonable/moderate fitness on a road bike, allow 35 minutes, starting from Coronation Drive, down Sylvan Rd until you get to Milton Rd, then its out along Centenary bikepath all the way until you get to the turn off at the Fig Tree Pocket Rd freeway overpass.

Allow a little more time if you are unsure of the route, or want to travel a little more relaxed. The Centenary bikepath has a few gradual but longish hills so that may add another 5 mins for some too. Its not super hard, but you may need to stop and check the map. Google Maps cycling directions will direct you the correct way if you just plug in the Kenmore Roundabout as your destination.

The ride is advertised as a 7:30am start, but I note they are now saying there is a pre-ride briefing at 7:15am in the shopping centre carpark immediately adjacent the roundabout.

The weather is forecast to be fine and a little cool, so brilliant riding conditions :-) I hope to see many of you there. I will be dude in the red and white velomobile - not hard to spot.

I'll be there. Going over Gap Creek Road route.

Kind of wish the police weren't attending though. Otherwise it will seem like to ride on the road we need police protection, or approval from the police to do such a thing.

From 7.30 onwards on that stretch its usually gridlock, so not having a police escort would make such a ride political suicide for us and others. The time of (week) day is a tad worrying as the comments will be unkind afterwards. Maybe a Saturday morning would have been better. Never mind, RSD to all who can attend.

Was it this guy:

Didn't have my rear camera going, but he was half in the bike lane and I had to wave my arms about, was almost going to bail left. Makes me wonder if the instructor was even paying attention, I wonder if I would have been splattered if it wasn't watching in my mirror.
