QLD Minimum Safe Passing Distance e-petition
Postby The 2nd Womble » Tue May 07, 2013 6:23 am
I will be pushing for this to be up and running by early next week. The petition is required to be sponsored by a State MP before it can go live on the parliamentary website for signing. I am hopeful that the Opposition Leader - Annastacia Palazczuk will sponsor the petition herself, but I will try several MP's if she chooses not to do so. If you know which QLD MP's cycle, let me know. The Transport Minister Scott Emerson does, but that hasn't helped us so far.
BTW I have taken the unusual step of appearing on 612ABC Brisbane Breakfast with Spencer Howson on Wednesday morning to announce the new petition before it goes live. It may help to get the Opposition Leader on side. She's a questionable Newman counterpart, but she is a very good egg. She was very keen on minimum safe passing distances prior to Labor's election loss when she was the Transport Minister herself.
"The petition of citizens of Queensland draws to the attention of the House deficiencies in the current overtaking laws in that motorists may come dangerously close to a cyclist while overtaking and at considerable speed, posing an undeniable risk and yet breach no law.Your petitioners therefore request the House to enact legislation to modify existing regulations requiring that a motorist maintain a minimum safe distance of one point five metres between their vehicle and a cyclist whilst overtaking. Such a measure will strengthen current laws with respect to cyclists. This proposal, by providing clear boundaries, will better serve the interests of motorists and cyclists alike. Furthermore, this proposal would also reflect the fact that it is not necessary for a motorist to collide with a cyclist in order to endanger either life or health; an anomaly that must be addressed if the government is to reduce congestion and promote cycling as a viable alternative means of transportation. I acknowledge the importance sustainable green initiatives, and due to ever increasing environmental awareness, more Queenslanders are now seeing cycling as a positive way of reducing their carbon footprint and minimizing congestion. We question how long such enthusiasm will last while the current ambiguous legislation remains unchanged. A minimum distance of one point five metres has the potential to maintain this momentum, as well as contributing towards the Governments current Cycling Strategy, helping more Queenslanders enjoy a healthier, safer future."

He is in government so I don't know if that would hinder or enhance his influence here. I understand he's partial to a bit of lobbing though
As a seperate issue, I am going to ask him for a seperated cycle path through the green corridor about 100m to the south of Moggill Rd.
Good work with the petition BTW. I will not only be signing it but will forward it on as wide as I can.

He's no longer a minister but he's still the sitting member and a member of the Newman govt. Opposition members always claim to be able to enact change if you vote them in. He's no longer busy with ministerial duties, so lets see some support for a local and state issue that should garner bipartisan support. The 2nd Womble wrote: Bruce Flegg is well and truly gaaaawn. If a catchphrase is needed, it could be "go one and another half" or something along those lines.
Whilst Flegg is on the outer with the LNP, he is actually a cyclist, so may he be predisposed to lobby in favour of such a proposal.

To make that punchier, they could drop the "Australia"... It would simplify the bill board and also takes away the personalisation (or us versus them)...The 2nd Womble wrote:

"Requiring a that a motorist maintain a minimum safe passing distance of one point five metres between their vehicle and a cyclist whilst overtaking, with a thirty metre exemption at intersections to allow for filtering."
That was a sticking point last time around. An MP will be sought for sponsorship tomorrow morning.

However I am not so sure this sign / sticker does the trick. I doubt that many motorists would even realise what it is referring to or what it means.

I dropped the petition into Mr Flegg's office an hour ago and am expecting him to call at some point apparently. I have also left a copy with Annastacia Palaszczuk as the former Transport Minister - who was keen on the proposal and wanting to try and find a workable solution to its sticking points - and current opposition leader. It's a waiting game now. If these two decide not to sponsor the petition, the member for Redlands, Peter Dowling has agreed to.Rhubarb wrote:I'll be writing to him too.The 2nd Womble wrote: He's a cyclist, it's his electorate, I'll be in his office tomorrow.

I would urge others in other states to launch this petition as well ASAP, ensuring it meets your state's parliamentary guidelines. A chap in WA has already started.
