Major cycle route under great stress....

Postby il padrone » Tue Feb 25, 2014 6:11 pm

....so what will the Nap-time Government do? Nuttin, nyet, nada, nicht! No deal. Shepherds Bridge will not get a widened shared path.

Despite a Vicroads report recommending that a major stuctural program be carried out including a new widened cycle path, the government has decided tthat it will widen the road for trucks, but leave cyclists hanging. Scurrilous response from this apology for a government.

What's happened in Vic? I get the impression that brakes have been put on bike related development

'Do nothin' government is what's happened! They're eager to sign up to an $8 billion contract for the east-west tunnel, so they'll have nothing left for much else for the next decade or two.

Someone needs to make them aware that their tunnel will lead to increased congestion and that they do not act for motorists, they act for the citizens.

In case you haven't looked, the majority of citizens are motorists too...

It's a pretty poor situation, given the comparatively tiny amount it'd cost to fix and the volumes of traffic that it carries.

That bridge is woeful. The deep gutter* practically guarantees a fall if you happen to misplace your front wheel.

The path is cracked, pocked, potholed, dirty and far too narrow for something which is so well used by cyclists.

*I haven't measured it, but it'd have to be up to 25cm in parts.

Let's not forget the monster poles in the middle of the path.

This gives you some idea of what this major shared path looks like - really just a glorified footpath, right beside the B-doubles.

There's more comedy relief with the more recent cycle lane markings on the footpath - not taking the position of the poles in the pathway into account.

I think a major campaign is in order to be honest.

The westgate bridge has no facilities for bicycles, therefore this is the necessary detour route, and should be first class, priority bicycle the entire way as a result of providing a tremendously expensive priority route to cars and trucks on the other route.

Not only is shepards bridge terrible, but the handling of the rest of the route is substandard too.
