Psychology: Why we don't like cyclists

Postby Aushiker » Sat Mar 22, 2014 11:48 am

This is a podcast from ABC 774 in Melbourne ...

Damien Adler has been looking into why so many people don't like cyclists.

This week an incident in Melbourne between a taxi passenger and a cyclist caused a minor storm between the motoring and cycling fraternities.

Damien found some research that helps to explain why we see cyclists in such a bad light.

Really interesting!
Fascinating that the research finds cyclists who drive are as intolerant of cyclists as non cyclist drivers ( sorry if that's confusing!).
Also interesting that drivers' respect is related to size of vehicle.
I really think this whole area is worthy of further study. Until more is known we are just peeing in the wind if we think we can change attitudes.....

Also very intriguing that these attitudes came out in European studies. My experience was that drivers in Europe were much more tolerant, considerate and accommodating of us as cyclists than drivers here in Australa.
