Trial begins for Queensland Truckie accused of killing cyclist

Postby redsonic » Tue Oct 18, 2016 1:36 pm

You may remember the Inglewood hit and run where Dr Martin Pearson (participating in an Audax event) was struck and left for dead when hit from behind by a truck.
The accused driver, Geoffrey Sleba, is facing court today. May justice be served.

"Police will allege the Lowood veterinarian was participating in a cycling event when Sleba's road train struck and killed him."

And...? :? Do they mean something by that? Was he breaking the law?

Poor sentence structure, there should be a comma after "event".
"If your next bike does not have disc brakes, the bike after that certainly will"

Dr Martin Pearson was riding in the last stage of an Audax ride - riding alone. No-one really knows at all what he was doing. It was some time later that following cyclists in the event came upon his bike and body.

Maybe Sleba knows what Pearson was doing, but probably not, as it is likely he (Sleba) was asleep or on drugs.

I don't.

That's why I said "likely", not "he was".

Of course, he may not have been, but long-distance truck-driver.... open road.... no others about...... no adverse conditions (afternoon if I recall and they were both heading NNE I think on that road). You sort it out. Yes, I may be speaking with no evidence, but I'm not about to 'go in to bat' for the truck-driver. Shall listen for the trial verdict.

Aaaaaaaaaaaand it's over before it begins. "New evidence has been sprung" on the defence by the Crown, jury discharged, new date probably Feb 2017.

Not going in to bat for the bloke IP. Not at all. Just sick of the "I fell asleep" or "I was on drugs" crap excuse. How about "I just don't give a flying"? Sums it up for me. No extenuating circumstances, sorry childhoods, employer pressures etc. Just I don't care. Coz that's what it is.

When the forumula (sic) is so predictable, it chalks up as another blemish of a sick society that we can "understand the way the world works" being that money is the highest motivation. Follow the money and we're acknowledging it's OK to have an industry operating in a poverty state so that others can function and profit excessively from it.
The system (made up of us people) are OK to hang this guy out to dry and call it a day. Issue "should-nots" and point to the law, but not make any revolution waves that would affect anyone's comfort levels, then send condolences and prayers to the victim's family on Sunday.

Judge postpones Geoffrey Sleba trial yet again as it is likely to clash with his holidays...
It has only been 3 years

Only 3 years? Good thing the the judge in question is adamant about clearing through the backlog of cases. I guess he's been flat out clearing the backlog and needs a holiday. https://www.themorningbulletin.com.au/n ... l/1166652/

So from the news article, the defence is running a dual strategy:

1. "It wasn't me that hit him".
2. "If I did hit him, it was the cyclists fault, because we can't be sure whether he had the taillight on or not".

I sometimes wish that judges would hold lawyers who run contradictory defences like this in contempt of court.

We have a case going on in WA where the defence is running a triple strategy:
1. You proved my car hit her (because her DNA was found on the car's underbody) but that doesn't prove I was driving;
2. I have type 2 diabetes and had a hypoglycaemic episode so I was acting without conscious input (which I then miraculously recovered from without eating anything) if I was driving; and,
3. I have sleep apnoea and microslept through the collision, if I was driving and if I was not having a hypoglycaemic episode.

Anybody running such a defence should get an immediate licence suspension.

Some years prior, wasn't this truck driver cleared of suspicion after shooting his wife in the back, killing her instantly?

And wasn't evidence found at the cyclist death scene of a smashed headlight, that was later shown to match the recently replaced headlight of the driver's truck?

ah yes, and the unfortunate wife was within 1 meter of the gun when shot.
and the accused had been sending sexually inappropriate texts to another woman some months beforehand.
