Check your rear wheels

Postby Jerryjan » Wed Mar 19, 2014 11:49 pm

Hi just had to change my rear wheel on my 11 month old Trek Domane. I had ridden approx 5000 kms. The rim had developed multiple cracks by the spoke nipples. Good news replaced under warranty no charge. But disappointing to see this is an old problem for trek which they have not fixed. Cheers Jerry

Amazing to hear. I've had mine close to 12 months now, done 4,500 kms and just looked at my rims. No visible damage :o Have just changed the rear tyre and, of course, a few tubes...

Someone I ride with occasionally broke a rear spoke on his less than one-year old Trek Domane. He's not a clydesdale either.

Spoke *ahem* too soon didn't I ... noise from the back wheel was due to rubbing spokes. Took into my LBS and seems some are about to crack ! Need to take it back for the rep to see it and I'll get a new wheel on warranty.

Found the same problem on my "Race" wheels fitted to my Domane :(

Several spokes had quite dramatic looking cracks, all on the drive side and when I looked closer nearly every drive side spoke showed some sign of cracks developing. Didn't seem to be anything on the non-drive side

took wheel in to LBS yesterday and they will talk to Trek on Tuesday. Mine are 2 years and 3 months old, warranty is 2 years but will be disappointed/annoyed if they don't replace it.

Fingers crossed!

I have had my 5.2 Domane for just under 1 year. 5000km. Had the rear wheel replaced at 6 months same problem. Again under warranty. Might go and have another look.

Hmmm Looks like I have joined the cracked rear wheel club. Was concerned about noises from the rear wheel when riding up my steep hill home. Checked the rear wheel and seven cracks on drive side spokes. Andy I noticed you are in Tas. Did Ken Self Cycles help you out. My wheels are only 14 months old.

Yep, Chris has the wheel and has sent the info through to Trek - just waiting to hear the outcome.

Are you in Tas? Two cases close together might help both of us :D

Yep Bought my Madone 5.9 from Chris in February 2014. Warranty on wheels is two years so it shouldn't be a problem (I Hope)

Thank you for the prompt through this thread Jerry.

My bike had recently been in for a service and when I saw this thread and then checked, I found the same cracking on the rear wheel (the front appears fine).

Super lucky as I'm only a few weeks from my two year warranty expiring.

It does leave me wondering how diligent the service guys have been ...

I'm chummy with the trek store down stairs from work. Last year over some Friday beers we were talking about wheels that were coming back with cracked nipples or rims. Apparently it felt like wheels were coming in every week for warranty both from customers finding it or during servicing. Not something they experience regularly with other wheels.
Just sounds like poor quality wheels really.

Rear wheel replaced with no issues, so I'm very happy with the support from my LBS ... even if they should have spotted and raised it at my recent service.

Not sure what to do now though as it seems to be a widespread problem and I have no more warranty ...

Does this still happen on modern Bontrager Race wheels? Lots of reports of these wheels cracking but they seem to be the same vintage as this thread, ~2014-2015. I'm very interested in the Domane as a future upgrade but not if the wheels are unreliable
