Ultegra set up for trek 1200-HELPPPP :D

Postby andrich » Tue Apr 15, 2014 8:53 pm

Hi Guys,
Im a newbie so please be nice lol

OK so i have a Trek 1200 and i would like to upgrade the groupset to 105 or ultegra 6700.
I have a few questions regaridng what i should get and the different combinations

So far i have found this:

1. Front derailer
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-ultegr ... erailleur/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

2.Rear derailer
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-rd-670 ... erailleur/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

3.Bottom bracket cup
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-ultegr ... t-cup-set/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

4.Brake calipers
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-ultegr ... e-caliper/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

5.Double chain set
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-ultegr ... t/#itemtop" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

6.10 speed cassette
http://www.this link is broken.au/shimano-ultegr ... -cassette/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

7.Double 10 speed levers
http://www.this link is broken/shimano-ultegra ... lever-set/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

8.10 speed ultegra chain
http://www.this link is broken/shimano-ultegra ... twin-pack/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Does that all look OK so far?

Basically my question is regarding my wheels and what groupset i can run (and most importantly what cassette). I have Alexrim AT450's and i am not sure if they are compatible with 10 or 11 speed cassettes. Can anyone tell me?

The other option i have is to run Altegra 11 speed 6800's like the link below
http://www.probikekit.co.uk/cycling-gro ... 36472.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

But again will an 11 speed cassette fit on my wheels?

A few other questions i have are:

1.What is the difference between Band-on and braze-on front derailers?

2. What size rear cassette should i get? i am pretty strong in the legs and usually ride flat to moderate hills. I was thinking 12-25 as a normal sort of one but would love some help

3. Along with Q2 im not sure what size chainset i should get. I have been reading up and i think a 53/39T 175mm would suit but again im not sure of the combo i should get

I think i have covered everything that i have a concern with. If there is any other info you think will help me please let me know

thanks in advance, the help is much appreciated

If it was me I would save my money and buy a new bike on special with the groupset your after. Unless you have somekind of sentimental attachment to it this seems like a lot of money to spend. If your getting a bike shop to do this work, add a few hundred to price.

Can't be certain but I doubt the wheels are 11 speed unless they have Mavic hubs.
Band on FD is exactly that, a band holds the FD to your frame, braze on is built into the frame and the FD attaches to it.
Gearing is hard to know what you need without knowing your level of fitness. Again if you buy a new bike you can probably try this out on a test ride and find out the easy way.

I'm with danny the boy here - the Trek 1200 is a low-end and older frame and you're looking to spend literally a thousand dollars to upgrade it. With plenty available in the marketplace currently, why not look for a well-specced new or used newer bike?

Good luck in any event.

cheers for the reply Danny

I know what ya mean, however iv looked into new bikes and with ultegra groupset and id be looking at a pretty expensive bike so i figured it wouldnt be a bad option just to upspec my current ride.

Can you reccommend any bikes with ultegra groupset that are relatively easy on the hip pocket? i may be looking in the wrong place.

I had a better look last night and found if i get certain parts from probikekit and wiggle it comes in abit cheaper.
It worked out to be $795 *which is think isnt to be for Ultegra)

I got a quote from a local bike shop and it was 1500!!! lol and about 1000 for 105's

This is the combination:

What size is your current bike and does it fit you properly, is the first question to be answered.

Then, search Ebay, http://www.bikeexchange.com.au" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; etc for a bike which would suit your size and desires.

There are numerous good bikes to be found if you look hard enough, and I'd expect you could pick up a nice Ultegra-equipped aluminium bike for under $1k, with carbon frames being only slightly dearer - if you are sharp with your searching.

I havent seen that site so i will check it out.
If im going to do it il go for a carbon frame.
If anyone finds anything or knows of a bike that would suit that would be great.

Yep 56cm or medium to large is in your ballpark at 5'11" or thereabouts. Good luck
