Bontrager Race X Lite TLR wheelset
Postby flashpixx » Mon Jul 07, 2014 5:30 pm
Compared to Shimano C35?? (yeah I know a different construction - and $300 more expensive, and similar weight to the Std Bonty Race Wheellset which I have now)

Thanks. Have gone with the RXL and so far very happy.trekbikes3242 wrote:I have never heard of RXLs cracking, buckling or busting spokes. I have a mate who treats his roadie like a cx bike and his RXLs have never needed repairing.

The difference from the old Race wheelset and tubed Road R3 is stark. Ride is ultra smooth even at 100 psi. Hold speed better and climbing is easier. Garmin reckons over a 50km+ ride increase in avge speed is 10%.
Pix coming when I get the bike back. I'm pretty slack for a photog

The more I hear experiences like yours the more tempted by tubeless I get, but then I see lots of people with the opposite experience and I go cold againflashpixx wrote:Have gone tubeless Bontrager Road R3. Not cheap at $80 each. The rear didn't want to hold pressure so back to the shop yesterday.

Maybe the key is to match rims and tyres. The race wheels that came with my 4.5 are TLR so I might get the conversion kit and give a set of R3s a go while I'm waiting to wear the wheels out
Look forward to seeing the pics

I am curious about what impact tubeless tyres on the Race wheelset may have made. I can't compare as I went straight from Race/tubed R3 to RXL wheelset/tubeless R3.AndyRevill wrote: Maybe the key is to match rims and tyres. Following some research It seems that smoothness is the largest noticable initial benefit of tubeless, the wheelset may be influencing the speed improvement?? Has to be some weight benefit of no tube I guess, but better bearings, lighter rims help too... I guess

Bike is back at the shop today to remedy (I hope) a slowly deflating rear tyre.

took the tyre off the rim, re-seated it and put in a bit more sealant.AndyRevill wrote:

Now over 3 weeks and 500 km since the tubeless tyres have been sorted. This includes the Ride to Conquer Cancer weekend of 220 km.
Put simply - the RXL Wheelset + tubeless combination is brilliant. Even if there were a slow deflation problem I would still persevere with tubeless. Right now the tyres are holding (AT) 100 PSI.
Rolling resistance is minimal, impact of side wind is minimal, pedalling is like pushing a warm knife through butter - smooth! The bike handles beautifully at slow speed and at high speed, wonderfully predicatable and stable.

You must have been reading my mind, I'd been thinking about asking for an updateflashpixx wrote:Further Update

Glad to hear they're going well as I've been pondering the fact that my R2s are likely to need replacing at some point through the summer so I think you may have sealed it (bad pun) and I might well get myself the R3 conversion kit and try them on the Race wheels - I can dream of the RXL upgrade.
Did you (or the LBS) use the Bontrager tape/valve/sealant? I'm thinking keeping everything Bontrager probably makes the experience easier even if it ends up costing a little more.
cheers, Andy

They use all Bontrager stuff - ensures any warranty claims are upheld by Trek/Bontrager if needed.AndyRevill wrote: Did you (or the LBS) use the Bontrager tape/valve/sealant? I'm thinking keeping everything Bontrager probably makes the experience easier even if it ends up costing a little more.
