Giant Psl-1 wheels be warned!!

From professional experience, it seems to be standard practice for the Giant wheels to be replaced with Shimano ones. Given where the P-SL1 sits in Giant's wheel range, it's more likely you'll get a RS31 than a R501.

Also, giant and Shimano share the same importer in Australia so it makes sense from that POV too.

No they don't. Giant Australia and Shimano Australia are completely independent of each other.

2014 defy advanced 1, broken 1 rear spoke and buckled the rim. I weigh 90kg. Will work my way down to 80kg.

Just paid for a new wheel set so that will solve the !! BAN ME NOW FOR SWEARING !! rim problem.

About 60km into my ride this morning I hear another rear spoke break. Took me an hour to walk back home with the buckled rim

Correct. A friend I ride with every week purchased a 2013 defy ult di2 and broke two spokes on those giant wheels within months; one on a soft climb and the other on a social sprint. He took the bike back and Giant replaced the wheels with shimano wheels. Amidst all that, he got into a set of fulcrum 3's and hasn't had an issue since. Those 3's are strong, light and spin great. He is a big unit; 6'2" and 100kg plus.

My 2c, don't rely on the stock giant rims unless you are super light.

Giant did the same for me (replacing PSL-0s with Mavic Cosmics) it is good to see a company actually back up the claims they make/invest in customer relations. Was a very pain free experience for me!

My Psl1s were replaced with RS61s they are an awesome wheel and so much better than the Giant wheels.

Did you go hard at it the first time round (braking hard on new pads and rim) or did you scrub the pads/rims in (being cautious to avoid heavy and fast breaking until they were scrubbed in)?

I get on the bike and I ride it.. if I need to use the brakes I do.. they are on a propel which even with the upgraded brakes still dosent stop that great lol

if their wheels cant hold up then there is something wrong, all the fulcrums and shimano wheels I have had in the past had no problems at all with the same pads etc..

The PSL-1 wheels had done ~800km when I took them off my Propel.

The brake tracks on my wheel still look new.

these are PSLR-1, not sure what the difference is.. they are standard fitment on a TCR SL0 I just swapped them between bikes as my propel came with the C50 tubs..

The point I was getting at was that if they are brand spanking new - especially new brake pads on new rims - is that you should break them in first due to resins and protective agents applied after manufacturing. Similar to spanking new tires having less grip than ones slightly worn in due to the resins applied.

Today my PSLR1 Aero wheels cracked the 9000km mark. And I really put those brakes and wheels through the ring without issues.

taking it easy on them is only going to delay the time taken for the soft alloy to turn to poo..

FWIW the pair of PSL-0 I had a few years ago didn't have these problems..
will be contacting giant about it tomorrow IMHO buying a $8k bike should have wheels that don't fall apart the first time they are used..

All I said was take it easy on them as they are brand new and unused components. All you have to do is run them in which should be an easy ride or two. Just because its an 8k bike does not mean you are immune from this. I've heard and seen bikes/wheels where people have gotten caught up in the "I have the same expensive gear the pros use" mentality and have just destroyed them from misuse/without proper knowledge and understanding.

If you have a wheel respoked or built up do you then ride the wheel into the ground or do you retension/retrue the wheel again after a couple weeks of riding?

If they are soft no amount of breaking in will fix that. It's just Giants sh#t attempt at building wheels and cutting costs. It's just unfortunate for them that they can't seem to shake this issue.
