2012 Giant Defy Composite 1 vs 2014 Giant Defy 1

2012 Giant Defy Composite 1 vs 2014 Giant Defy 1

Hey,

Just asking for some advice, I can pick up a 2012 Giant Composite Defy 1 ( http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-au/bik ... 681/50845/ ) for about the same price as a 2014 Giant Defy 1 ( http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-au/bik ... 893/66355/ ). I can get either for about $1250 easily.

I am just a beginner road-cyclist and this will be my first road bike. I've been an avid MTB-er my whole life so I do enjoy my riding and I can appreciate a nice bike when I ride one. I hope to do some group rides once I'm confident enough on the roads and I'll just be riding for leisure with my partner.

Main differences I notice are the;
- Groupset (Ultegra vs 105)
- P-SL1 Wheelset on the Composite
- Carbon frame on the Composite
- New vs Used

Which bike should I opt for and which one would you recommend? I've got my eyes set on a Giant as they've been rock-solid over the years and there's not much else out there in the second-hand market.

Any advice is most welcome,

Cheers.

Go the carbon frame. You can always upspec the components down the track.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

If you want comfort over performance then the composite is your go to frame. The frame soaks up vibrations better than the alloy.

Yeah add another vote for the Comp 1 if its in good condition. Plus the colour scheme on the 2012 Defy Comp 1 is heaps better compared the sickly light blue of the 2014 Defy 1 imo. I'm a little biased (because I have one!) and its a great bike. BTW I went through the same thing and had the choice of a $900 2012 Defy Comp1, $1200 2013 Defy 1 and $1500 Defy Adv 2 and I ended up going the 2012 defy Comp 1. My choice was a little easier at that bargain price though :-)

PS - My Flight is still my best bike mind you (who would of thought a no-name would be so good).

Fyi I have seen two bikes on ebay and gumtree in the two weeks claiming to be 2012 defy comp 1's when in fact they have not been so. So be careful.
