Giant propel options
Postby Cmm » Sun Feb 02, 2014 7:28 pm
Hi if all goes to plan I will have the chance to get one of 2 propels either
An ex pro team (blanco) training bike sl0 running 9070di2 it will require wheels and cassette to finish the package off but it does have di2 but is probable well used.
Or
A near new sl1 its a complete bike as it would be in the lbs pros are comes complete decent wheel set less used. Cons if you can call 9000 a com but it is mechanical.
Let me know which you would go and y
Thanks
Chris

How much does the ex Blanco bike cost, and what will it cost to add a rear cassette and decent wheels, compared to the cost of the second hand LBS bike?
On the LBS bike, is it a shop demo bike, or a second hand bike bought by the store and being on sold?
I guess you just near to find out about the wear and tear on the frames, and weigh up what parts will need to replaced in the medium to long term.

From that it seems like the sl1 would be a better option considering the cost to get a similar wheel set and then the wear and tear on the groupo and frame of the blanco bike and sheer expense of replacing 9070 components.

I would hardly consider 9000 Dura-Ace a con. 7900 maybe.
If it's an ex-shop staff or demo bike, they will often consider you as the original purchaser, so you get full warranty cover, which you probably won't get with an ex-team bike. Also the Propel frames are fully mech/Di2 two-way compatible, so if you really feel like an upgrade to Di2 it's not that much of a chore to convert. All you need is shifters, derailleurs & wiring kit.

Of that pair, definitely the DA9000 SL1 - DA9000 is said to be sweeeet in all aspects.
A former team bike is venturing into the unknown just a tad too much for my liking - no warranty and will have been ridden hard, so very well used.
cheers

Duck i never ment it was a con in general but compared to 9070 it could be considered lower but its above all else!
and yeah i think unless its half the price the pro bike just doesnt look like a good option.
Thanks all for your opinions.

Should you down size when going to a propel? With the flatter top tube vs the sloping tube of the tcr or defy?

Ive the tcr with 9000. Great bike.
The fact you are asking on a forum for bicycle sizing means the shop you are buying from doesnt do a very good bike fit and you are best going elsewhere.
Would you ask on a forum what size shoes you should buy? Bicycle fit is even more finicky. Go see Steve Hogg in sydney.
I won't get started on the risk of buying the most thrashed lightweight carbon bikes on the market.

No. The point-to-point geometry is the same as the TCR, just with the top tube levelled. You would go the same size, because ultimately the top tube length is a more accurate size reference, not the BB centre-to-some-arbitrarily-variable-point-somewhere-at-the-top-of-the-frame measurement.Cmm wrote:Should you down size when going to a propel? You would still go the same size as your Defy, but do note that due to the different intended purpose, the TCR/Propel geometry is longer and lower than you're used to. Depending on frame size the Defy is up to 15mm shorter along the top, and up to 25mm taller than it's TCR equivalent.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Thanks duck yeah I have looked at the frame measurements between the tcr/propel and the defy and I am after something a little more aggressive than the defy.

For reference, I ride both a TCR and OCR (Defy forerunner), both the same size (M). Sure the geo difference is apparent, but not awkwardly so (partially 'cos I tried to replicate the TCR's aggro setup on the commuting OCR), but not enough to warrant changing frame size. Going down a size on the Propel would slightly shorten your TT length from the Defy, but massively reduce your bar height, and that wouldn't be an ideal setup.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.
