2016 TCR vs Propel weight comparisons

Postby jerrah » Sun Oct 25, 2015 11:09 pm

Out of curiosity I had my LBS weigh a 2016 TCR Advanced Pro 0 and a Propel Advanced Pro 0.

The Propel looks like outstanding value to me in that I value the Ultegra Di2 over the Dura-ace mechanical of the TCR, although I've taken neither for a test ride so that's all for nothing until I do. Riding enjoyment is not all about spec and weights, but it's an interest until I'm ready to put down a deposit on something.

The weights both in medium:

TCR Advanced Pro 0: 6.8kg.
Propel Advanced Pro 0: 8.5kg.

Now I'd give the propel a bit more weight because it's "aero" but I've seen numbers bandied around the internet of them weighing around 7kg. Clearly with some different spec components than a stock Advanced Pro 0.

What weights are bicycles.net.au members seeing for their Propels? What modifications have you made to get the weight down if any?

How lacking in "aero" is the new 2016 TCR compared to a Propel and realistically how much difference does it make? I understand I am the least aerodynamic part of my bicycle.

I found this aerodynamic comparison on weight-weenies. In 2014 it didn't look like a significant difference which makes you wonder why people would take the extra weight?

The LBS weighted a Small 2015 Propel Adv Pro 0 at about 7.5-7.6 kg for me.

Anything 8.5kg is a brick. Aero = marketing.

Are you sure that Propel weight is correct? I weighed my aluminium Defy when I first bought it, it was around 9kg with pedals. (Of course, that was before I started to put heavy bits on it. Like my body.) Surely a carbon fibre Ultegra wondermachine would have be significantly lighter!

My ML 2015 Propel Advanced 1 weighs in at 7.8kg with Fulcrum Racing 3's and pedals.

My Oppy is 1kg heavier with the same wheels.

I was surprised so I got him to weigh it twice. Both bikes come in much lighter than my carbon Defy. Maybe the wheels are a direction to cut some weight? There is the SL Propel's as well which would be lighter.

I assume the 2016 TCR Advanced SL should be lighter again.

If I get a chance I'll get them to re-weigh them all. It's probably all moot measuring mediums as I need a large. No large frames were on the floor oddly enough?
