Defy 1 2013 upgrade

Postby zzkazu » Tue Feb 02, 2016 6:35 pm

Hi I'm thinking of handing my 2013 Defy 1 to my son so we can do some weekend rides together. I only do about 150km a week but looking to upgrade the Defy 1 (has Campagnolo Zonda Road Wheelset); any good options up to $3.5K mark atm? Happy to transfer the wheels to new bike if that helps options.

I ride with some who have the current giants with disc brakes they are not a fan, and they make a lot of noise.

thanks

3.5k your probably looking at entry level carbon. Depending on what groupset you choose or what special you get, you might get a fair chunk of change back.

I reckon you could get a nice carbon frame and 6870 Di2 for $3.5k. You know your size on the Defy so I'd look for something secondhand off Gumtree and go test ride a few. You will save yourself about $1k. And yeah I would steal those Zondas back and buy something with a lower wheelset and put the lower wheels on the Defy (or if you have the old orig Defy wheels put those back on and negotiate a price without wheels on the new/secondhand bike - I have done that a couple of times and saved a couple of hundred bucks).

I'm surprised to hear that about the new Defys if you are not keen on them then maybe step back to the 2014s and go a Defy or TCR Advanced SL. You may struggle to find 6870 Di2 on those models as they didn't originally come out on the SL but rather the Advanced which might be another option.

Or if you are keen on another make I reckon the Trek Domane might be on my radar next or possibly a Specialized Tarmac (which are very different bikes to each other). But lots of other makes just as good. Good luck.

Noise is an indication that the brakes haven't been bedded in properly. Disc btakes need to be worked hard, especially when new to get a layer of pad material stuck to the rotors & optimise performance. Prolonged light dragging cooks & glazes the pads, and that is when they really get noisy
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

There is this exact model bike on Gumtree for $2.5k. Thats what I mean by saving a $1k secondhand.

Personally I'm anything but against disc brakes on roadies, but the CELL Omeo 2.0 is a lot of bike for the $$$ - given the online store is out of stock and they are upgrading other bikes might be a new model in the works (hopefully with discs :D). I'd have it on my shortlist...

Is the SL a 'big' upgrade over the Advanced Pro? Price seems to suggest so....

This also looks like good value

It wouldn't be huge but its just nice knowing its the best quality/stronger/lighter frame you can buy more than anything... If you go a Pro then go Di2, you won't regret it. There is lots of debate whether its best to go the SL frame and the 6800 ultegra or the Pro and Di2. I'll sit on the fence with that one. :-)

Now you got me thinking why I would'nt go for the Defy Advanced Pro 1 with Di2's... After all I'm a geek..

Reading some threads where cracks are appearing in Giant frames, noting the warranty restriction:

"GIANT WARRANTY
Giant warrants for the original owner only the frame, rigid fork, or original component parts of each new Giant
brand bicycle to be free from defects in material and workmanship for the following specified periods:
Warranty of lifetime for -
• The bicycle frame, except on models intended for downhill purposes"

I don't think I can risk buying a second-hand bike...

What has really thrown a spanner in the works is the devalued dollar. 2016 bikes have jumped up alot!

I like buying secondhand or older new models, so what, you don't get the latest. There is so much hype around new tech. It really makes very little difference to your riding.

I would be going for high end but an older model, you can save many thousands, 3.5k is a fair bit to play with.

Softy agree with everything you said, just concerned to find a fault in a 3.5K SH frame down the track. I wonder if the warranty conditions are liberally applied?
