Giant 2018 bikes

Postby Jawa » Tue Apr 04, 2017 1:57 pm

I know we are still a few months off getting details on the 2018 bikes but what are we likely to see? Status quo or something new?
The Propel I believe is due for revision and im personally hoping there will be internal routing for disc brakes on the road forks.

Probably more TCR's with discs too.
I overtook some people going uphill once.

New Claris R2000 and upcoming Ultegra R8000 should feature on 2018 bikes too.

The Propel is likely to be the only properly new thing on the road - assuming the rumours of its arrival are true.

The Defy/Contend and TCR frames are still well within Giant's typical production run time, so are likely to be little changed, except, as noted above, at model levels that spec Claris and Ultegra, as those groups are due for updating in Shimano's progression. We may see some mechanical Dura-Ace specced somewhere too, something that was missing from the '17 range due to timing of its introduction (some late-release Di2 models snuck out in limited numbers though).

On the dirt, we may see new Glory downhill and Reign all-mountain rigs, but basically everything from the Trance down will carry over as they're all pretty recent introductions. Deore has its turn for a full update this year, so that too will attach to models at that level.
I had a thought, but it got run over as it crossed my mind.

Wow, didn't know that was in the pipeline. Another reason to hold off on a new bike then.

Aesthetically speaking, as mentioned I hope for internal routing for discs on the front fork. I think also its time to move away from blacks and matte finishes.

Giant have just announced the first round of "early release" 2018 recreational models. Nothing radical at this stage, the juicy stuff won't be shown until the "full line" launch in late July. For the most part it's just new paint jobs, but the entry roadies specced with Claris will get the new R2000 version, although some early-build models may carry 2400, depending on supply of the new stuff (the same happened last year with the Sora bikes; early build examples shipped with 3500, until supply of R3000 commenced).

The currently-released range covers all the kids' bikes, MTBs up to the Talon series, Roam hybrids and on the road the Cross City, AnyRoad/FastRoad and Contend series, with a couple of (comparitively) low-end TCRs, one of which is a new Disc model to round things out.

If you're on Farcebook, check out the Giant Bikes Australia page, they have published an album with most of the models covered, although there are a few gaps.

Will be interesting to see if there will be any price rises this year too, USD/AUD was pretty much the same today as this time last year though. But considering the jittery nature of finance these days I wouldn't be surprised if Giant hedge bets and raise prices to absorb possible losses in months to come ... still, better than being in the UK presently

I haven't looked closely at the price lists, but there have been some minor increases over the '17 models.

Giant have started releasing teasers of some New Stuff for 2018. Nothing yet on the Propel, but for the dirt there's a new Anthem 29er, the first total redesign for that model since its release way back around 2011, although it's had some minor tweaks in that time. Available in three frame levels, aluminium, Advanced with carbon mainframe & aluminium rear swingarm, and Advanced Pro, which gets a carbon rear end, a first for any Giant 29er dually (a carbon rear was last seen on the 26" Anthem and Trance SLs, discontinued in 2012).

For the ladies, just announced today is the new Liv Langma, developed off the TCR, and available in Advanced, Advanced Pro, like the TCR with rim and disc brake versions in both series, and a rim brake-only Advanced SL.

Exact specs & prices for both the Anthem and Langma models are yet to be released.

Hi Duck,

Do you know if the new Anthem 29ers mean that there will no longer be 27.5 Anthems in 2018?

I'm only 160cm, and looking to replace my 2009 Anthem X (XS/14.5 inch size, 26 inch wheels).

I doubt I'd fit a 29er, so perhaps I'd better get a 2017 Anthem before it's too late.

The 27.5s only got a major rework last year, so they will carry on for a while longer. The 29 is being billed as a pure racer, where the 27.5, which has slightly more suspension travel and a slacker front end, is more of an all-rounder.

In fact the 29er has only had one year as the sole bearer of the Anthem name in its history, in 2013; it lived alongside the 26ers in '11 & '12, and the 27.5s since 2014.

Nice (that they'd finally done hidden cables, however the stem looks ugly). Now get that integrated cable setup onto the TCR series instead of having cables going every which way. :)

I'm seeing the new one above from the JP website and not seeing any reason I would upgrade my already upgraded to the max 2013 TCR (the green one).

There won't be anything dramatically new with the TCR this year; the rim braked frame is entering its third year of production, while the disc braked version only its second year, so both will have some life in them yet.

The Sunweb bike above looks to be in a similar vein to the Alpecin one they popped out a couple of years ago - basically an Advanced Pro 1 with a team paint job, not a proper team-spec bike.

The wheels may just have new graphics; wouldn't be the first time that's been done. Again, details late this month/early next month with the Aus launch.

I guess Giant Italy have jumped the gun

New TCR's and Propels https://www.giant-bicycles.com/it/biciclette/on-road

The TCR's look fine, but they always have. But the paint jobs on the Propels look .. ahem ... interesting

... and Defys (no Ui2 Defy shown yet oddly).

Looks like a general price rise in all levels coming up. It's strange how .au bikes are priced, the top end in each cat is (for example) more competitive i.e. lower % markup than the low & middle of each range when you compare them to US prices.

Yeah, I dont understand what will happen with the 2018 prices. Trek’s seem to have lowered the Emonda prices from the current 2017 models but also come with more in house tech from Bontreger. The Propels atleast seem like they have been downgraded wheel wise which is a shame. The disc’s brake cable still isn’t internal on the TCR fork smh

I quite like the paint job on those propels. Especially the blue/green one. No disc version listed though.

Unsubstantiated price guesses!

The Anthem Advanced is 3799 euro in Italy, $5499 here
The Anthem Advanced 1 29er is 4499 euro, so likely around $6499

approx 0.7x

Roughly based on my thoughts that they don't hit quite so hard at the top end in each cat

The TCR Advanced MR is 7999 euro, $9499 here
The Anthem Advanced 0 29er is 7399 euro, so likely around $8799

approx 0.85x

Im no expert but those Italian prices may include their VAT (our GST) with a quick google says 22%

Im expecting a price bump because im cynical like that, and Giant was on my shortlist. But a crazy price rise together with those horrid colourways (imo) would strike them off the list for me. Will wait for aussie launch deets though before I have my final say

There has been a slight price bump to the early release models that are already out, so that will carry through to the rest of the range, but exactly how much remains to be seen.

I don't know the total numbers worldwide, but only 20 of the Maglia Rosa edition TCR have made it to Australia, so its rarity will contribute to the price.
